Ben Affleck puts his guard down and impressively expresses anger, frustration and pain through divorcee Jack in The Way Back, a drama directed by Gavin O’Connor. Ben shared in an interview that his performance allowed him to define the story—which also tackles alcoholism—from his perspective. Though sports-centred, the movie also tackles the game of life; how Jack takes another shot at basketball after losing his dream in high school.

Ben Affleck either has a nonchalant or jaded look which conveniently works in the movie adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. Directed by David Fincher, the movie puts Nick (played by Ben Affleck) in a bad spot after his wife, Amy (played by the talented Rosamund Pike) goes missing and he appears a bit too indifferent as he seeks help, and their story is shared to the public. It’s interesting to see Ben in a movie like this after starring in several romantic comedies.

No, not Amazing Amy. But Chasing Amy isn’t exactly a romantic comedy, either. In the movie, Holden (played by Ben Affleck) is infatuated by Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), who he continues to befriend after learning that she’s a lesbian. Although the movie doesn’t exactly nail the dialogue regarding sexuality, the audience will find themselves empathising with Holden and drawn in as they go through twists and turns that just makes the movie worth a watch.

In preparation for Pearl Harbor, Ben Affleck had to go through a rigorous pre-ranger training course which the actor described as the “hardest thing he’s ever done” by far. It helped Ben deliver a great performance in the movie. Directed by Michael Bay, this story of war and romance builds on the tragedy that occurred on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Tied to the infamous historical event, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. The movie’s audience is caught in the middle of two opposing sides as two stories are told in this movie—the attack on Pearl Harbor and a love triangle involving best friends Rafe (Ben) and Danny (Josh Hartnett).

Directed by the man himself, The Town is a compelling movie that’s inspired by actual events. Ben Affleck acting alongside Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Hall is a treat. The viewers become attached to the characters, anticipating their every move. It’s always a thrill to see a movie that presents the story of a conflicted protagonist.
