There’s more to anime than Naruto and One Punch Man; check out these Japanese animated movies and series that are worth watching!

Most creators of anime, a form of Japanese animation, pursue mature themes and topics yet most of these shows are marketed towards children. However, by now, even grown adults have come to develop a deeper appreciation for certain shows not only for the epic fight scenes but for major plot twists, well-written narratives, and gut-wrenching scenes. I've come to learn this after asking for recommendations from friends who are quite huge anime fans.

The choices range from hair-raising thrillers, fun adventures, to sports-centred flicks. Browse below to choose what you can start with:

1. Haikyuu

Haikyuu, stylised as Haikyuu!!, is originally a comedy manga series. Haruichi Furudate, the writer and illustrator of the show, wanted to tell the story of Shoyo Hinata, who’s called “the small giant”. The show follows Hinata who aspires to be a professional volleyball player.

This coming-of-age tale’s premise might seem all too simple, but once you go through the episodes, you’ll be left reaching for a box of tissues as it teaches you about loss, victory, and everything else that comes with the sport.

What does it mean to be a hero? If you love superheroes, then you might feel for Izuku Midoriya in My Hero Academia, an ordinary boy who admires superhumans. Soon, he lives his dream of becoming one when he acquires the world’s best superhero, All Might’s powers and joins UA, the high school for heroes.

Suddenly, being a hero doesn’t seem to be everything he’s imagined. Join the hero’s journey in this action and adventure series created by Kohei Horikoshi.

3. Death Note

No, not the live-action movie adaptation. Instead, watch the original anime first to see how Tsugumi Ohba imagined a world where the death note, a notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written into it, exists. Would be a shame if the book landed in the wrong hands—which of course happens as it ends up in the possession of Light Yagami, a teen sociopath who plans on eradicating every single criminal.

However, you must always expect the unexpected while watching this series as things aren’t always what they seem. The mystery and irony are so well-written into the story that you wouldn’t dare to miss an episode.

You’ll even enjoy the animation thanks to Ufotable.

Enter the fantastical world of Miyo Sasaki in A Whisker Away, an anime film created by Mari Okada. It’s always good to become lost in a story of magic, romance, and adventure once in a while. Like Miyo, she uses a magic mask she discovered that allows her to turn into a white cat. However, as they say, too much of something can be dangerous. Let’s just hope she makes the right decision before she becomes stuck in the body of a cat forever.
