Produced by TBA Studios, 'Theory of Light' is set to chronicle the current environmental crisis and how the NGO, Liter of Light, continues to push back against it

Information dissemination is one of the most important factors in climate change communication. This year, Liter of Light, a Filipino born grassroots movement known globally for their efforts in providing solar-powered lighting to remote areas, is gearing up to extend valuable knowledge through an environmental film entitled Theory of Light. “Most media coverage to date focuses on the receiving effects of the climate crisis; as victims and stops there,” says Illac Diaz, Founder and Executive Director of Liter of Light. “In fact, only 1 per cent of all global expenses for filmmaking are spent on the environment and the growing climate crisis. With this documentary, we want to flip the script, and share stories of common humanity and hope that inspires others to make urgent and right decisions for the people and planet.”

Having premiered at the Opportunity Forum at the EXPO2020 in Dubai last March 27, 2022, the environmental documentary chronicles how the NGO continues to take action against climate change, even while at home. It hopes to inspire new generations of innovators to come up with ideas on how we as a global community can decrease the impact of the current environmental crisis. Interestingly, it was helmed by filmmaker J.P. Gopez, who had also previously worked with National Geographic.

Theory of Light is produced and distributed by TBA Studios. Best known for groundbreaking film and cinematography, TBA Studios is also known as the mastermind behind box office hits Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.

Now, their nationalistic approach towards film is being used to fortify the necessity of climate action, especially in a country such as ours, which lies directly on the typhoon belt and is also one of the most climate vulnerable. "TBA Studios has always been committed to bringing to life stories that inspire, educate, and entertain," says the studio's CEO, E.A. Rocha. "We hope that this project will touch people's lives—the way it did ours—and continue to influence decision-makers around the world to create more sustainable and tangible solutions for all."

Developed with the support of SM Prime Holdings, Theory of Light exposes reminds its viewers to all the devastation brought on by climate change. "For our children’s children, the present generation must come together and adapt to the challenges of climate change. Theory of Light shows us that even the simplest folk can do their part and be an excellent example of resilience and disaster preparedness. We find shining beacons of light amid natural disasters,” adds Hans T. Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee for SM Prime Holdings.
