Tune in to our monthly mixtape, curated by members of Singapore’s music community

A music maven and curator of good times, Dean Chew is the co‑founder and artistic director of Singapore‑based music collective Darker Than Wax. As well as being a globally respected underground electronic music label, Darker Than Wax knows how to throw a party. And with live music back on the menu in Singapore, Chew says he feels “an incredible sense of relief and happiness”, and that it has “given life back to this island”.

Chew recently revived Darker Than Wax’s beloved Brew parties in the courtyard of Chye Seng Huat Hardware coffee shop at Jalan Besar. “The turnout was incredible,” he says. “We could feel the love and energy in the atmosphere, and it was gratifying to see how music has such a positive impact on peoples’ lives.”

Videos from the event were widely circulated on social media, showing scenes of crowds enjoying eclectic tunes played by the Darker Than Wax crew. “As a selector and DJ, genres and categories really don’t mean much to me,” says Chew. “I’ve always been interested in connecting the dots between various forms of music in my sets, be they old or new. It’s a feeling, an instinct, not a style.”

This January, Chew teamed up with local party collective Ice Cream Sundays to open the music‑centric bar and restaurant, Offtrack. It brings together three of Chew’s big loves—architecture, design and food—in a sleek, psychedelic space anchored by a DJ booth where he hopes to host musical talents from around the region and the world.

He says the experience has been “very surreal” and that he feels “blessed to be in a position where I can facilitate an environment for people to thrive in”. Stay tuned.
