The American fashion designer received an honorary knighthood from Prince Charles on Wednesday

Ralph Lauren, 79, can now add an honorific to his name: Sir.

On Wednesday, during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London, Prince Charles gave Lauren an honorary knighthood, making him the first American designer to receive the award.

Lauren is no stranger to accolades. In the past, he's received the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur from France and a Key to the City of New York, reports Vanity Fair

Knighthoods, along with all other awards, are bestowed by Queen Elizabeth. In an email to the AP, Lauren wrote that he's always been influenced by the U.K.'s history and traditions, and considers the title "a very special moment."

Now, he's joining the ranks of fellow Americans who have also received the honour, including Angelina Jolie, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Bill and Melinda Gates and Steven Spielberg.
