From the moments that inspired their careers to the inspiring new blood in the industry, Leung Chung Hang, Rachel Leung, Hanna Chan and Carol Cheng identified an exciting new chapter for Hong Kong cinema

On September 9, 2021, the first day of The Timeless Stories of Hong Kong Cinema, a weeklong film programme presented by Jaeger-LeCoultre and Golden Scene Cinema, young actors Leung Chung Hang, Rachel Leung and Hanna Chan sat with established television host and actress Carol Cheng for an afternoon dialogue on the topic “New Generations”.

In the 45-minute conversation, the trio shared how it was the joy of watching films that prompted them to enter the industry. Chan, who was a design student before being cast in short films such as G Affairs (2018) and Paradox (2019), found that acting allows her to explore her emotions. Leung, similarly, recalled how Natalie Portman’s performance in psychological thriller Black Swan “shook her to the bone”. It inspired the former dancer to see acting as a way of conveying her feelings more explicitly.

As the new blood of the local filmmaking industry, the three also discussed their career development. Hang, a full-time stage actor at Chung Ying Theatre Company, said it wasn’t until he played Paralympic champion So Wa Wai in Zero to Hero (2021) that he tried acting for the silver screen. He said that the different formats allow him to explore and adjust his own performance. He also considers his relative lack of fame to be an advantage for his career for now. “I’m nothing, which is why I can be everything. I can be So Wa-wai, but I can be an assassin too,” he said. “In the future, I hope that the name Leung Chung Hang will mean quality acting, whether it is in a film or on the stage.” He added that the pandemic has forced him to reflect on roles in the industry beyond acting, such as directing and scriptwriting.

While the three wish to see themselves working in different film genres from each other, they all believe that “filmmaking is a passionate profession”, as Leung put it. Cheng, the veteran actress, ended the night with some advice on how to keep their passion for the job alive: “An actor is a tool. The most important [element in filmmaking] is the script and I advise against clichés,” she said. “If the characterisation is clear, even a simple dialogue will be able to offer a refreshing experience for the audience. The actors’ job is to practise their craft, so that when they are given a good script, they will be able to deliver a good performance.”
