Last Thursday saw hordes of people dressed up to the nines to witness the crowning of the new Miss Universe Malaysia 2019, which went to Shwetajeet Kaur, or better known as Shweta Sekhon. The 22-year old won the title after beating 17 other contestants, and also brought home the title of Miss Glojas Beautiful. The first-runner up title went to 25-year-old Frost Yaw Hui Jing from Johor, while the second went to 23-year-old Tessminderjeet Kaur from Selangor and the third went to Kuala Lumpur's 25-year old Lee Su Hsien.
As the new Miss Universe Malaysia 2019, Shweta received a Habib Jewels crown costing RM2.38 million, cash and sponsored prizes with a combined value of RM180,000 and a full education scholarship from HELP university. She will then go on to represent Malaysia at the Miss Universe competition later this year.
The panel of judges consisted of Alia Bastamam (creative director of Alia Bastamam), Dato' Dr JasG (CEO & founder of Glojas Smart International Aesthetic), Kiran Jassal (Miss Universe Malaysia 2016), Lynn Lim (actress), Miko Au (Miko Galere's celebrity hairstylist), Dr Nicholas Lim (medical director of La Jung Clinic), TJ Chan (head of branding and marketing communications for Malaysia Airlines Berhad) and Whulandry Herman (Miss Universe Indonesia 2013).
Emcees for the Gala Night were Andrea Fonseka and Hansen Lee, while over 800 guests consisting Hannah Yeoh, Dato’ Yasmin Yusuff, Dato’ Hans Isaac, Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 Deborah Henry, Miss Universe Malaysia 2015 Vanessa Tevi Kumares, Kavita Sidhu.
On the entertainment side, the gala night featured a variety of performances including an opening act by hurr.tv talents Yazmin Aziz and Aqeesh, Hong Kong singer Rainky Wai, songstress Dato’ Sheila Majid, Kpop dance group ISE and comedian Jason Leong.
