When society doyenne Peggy Jeffs announced she was throwing a birthday party, we knew it wasn’t going to be a quiet affair. Even before the theme of the party was revealed (“Life is a still a cabaret”) friends of the birthday girl knew that her predilection for sequins, feathers and jewels would weave its way into the soiree at the Tanglin Club. In tribute to her inimitable style, many guests turned up in Peggy’s favourite fashion item—the headdress. There were bejewelled turbans, netted fascinators, 1920s brain binders and pearly skull caps. Yet no one’s headdress could outdo the birthday girl’s—a 50cm-high feathered masterpiece that stood firm through wild dancing, passionate singing (by Lotus Soh and Noor Quek) and the blowing out of birthday candles—all 101 of them, to be precise! Why 101, we asked, to which Peggy replied, “When you’re enjoying life, who cares what age you are? It’s a random number.”
