Celebrating the enduring nature of Hong Kong cinema with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Golden Scene Cinema

Hong Kong cinema has a unique aesthetic, one that has spanned several decades and developed a loyal fanbase in the process.

From September 9 to 15, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Golden Scene Cinema hosted The Timeless Stories of Hong Kong Cinema, a weeklong event that celebrated the milestones in the city’s filmmaking history and its vibrant future.

The event saw the independent cinema in Kennedy Town transform into the 1931 Café, and celebrated Jaeger-LeCoultre’s ties to the cinematic arts. The café’s interiors were inspired by the art deco aesthetic of the Reverso watch, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, and channelled the era’s spirit of modernity.

The weeklong event played host to a series of talks, with subjects ranging from diversity in Hong Kong cinema to the role of art direction in films and the shifting landscape of documentary filmmaking.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has long championed the cinematic arts and, through its film restoration programme, has restored 14 films to date, reviving classic films and bringing them into the 21st century. Throughout the week, the cinema hosted screenings of four classic films—The Spring River Flows East, A Better Tomorrow, C’est La Vie, Mon Cheri and Flowers of Shanghai—shown in a restored 4K format for the first time in Hong Kong.

A near-instant icon upon its release, the Reverso offered wearers the unique combination of a highly durable timepiece (it was frequently worn by polo players) while remaining aesthetically in line with the trends of the era. Ninety years after its debut, the design has stood the test of time and continues to be a highly coveted timepiece.

During the event, the 1931 Café served guests fresh pastries from a special menu created by Paris-based patissier Nina Métayer, who creates items that echo the archetypal geometry of 1920s architecture, drawing on the flavours of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s home in the Vallée de Joux, from mountain berries and honey to Swiss chocolate.

The Reverso Exhibition displays rarely seen historical timepieces and milestone Reverso watches, dating from the first iteration to the most contemporary watches, while taking pride of place in the theatre was an installation by American artist Michael Murphy. Spacetime, which made its debut at the Reverso exhibition in Shanghai earlier this year, explores the relationship between time and space, each of the installation’s many layers presenting the concept of time in a unique way.
