The entrepreneur's birthday was a star-studded affair

It’s Ruth Chao’s birthday and she’ll feast if she wants to. With social distancing still in place, Chao’s birthday was just the excuse her friends needed to dress to the nines. The creative director and graphic artist behind her eponymous design studio rang in her birthday at the Landmark, Mandarin Oriental hotel alongside her closest gal pals on June 10.

“Before the pandemic kicked in, the original plan was for me to be in Tokyo for my birthday, but this celebration was, in many ways, even more special. I have an amazing group of women who truly support one another and I am blessed to have them in my life,” says Chao.

Friends present included Queenie Rosita Law, Nadia Harilela, Veronica Lam, Tiffany Chan Lo, Chelsea Chau-Kuok, René Chu, Vickie Li-Kwok and Yvonne Fong, joined the birthday girl at Amber, the Michelin-starred French restaurant which has recently undergone a full rebrand by the hosts’ creative agency RCS.

It was practically a restaurant takeover, with the impeccably dressed guests split over two tables, tucking into a seven-course dinner of imaginative flavours, fresh ingredients and masterful techniques prepared by executive chef Richard Ekkebus. The birthday girl was showered with bouquets of flowers and designer gifts, including a faux fur jacket with her initials on it—a custom piece that each of her girlfriends also has. No birthday is complete without sweet treats and, at the end of the evening, Chao made her way to the centre of the room to slice her cake, topping off an exquisite celebration.
