Matthew Lam, managing partner of Nixon Peabody CWL—and owner of Brave Legend, the horse that won this year’s Community Chest Cup—shares tips on how to back a winner at the races
1. As a beginner, stick to simple bets. I’d recommend betting on a win or second place, rather than anything more complicated.

2. You can choose a horse based on a name you like or the appearance of the horse, but try to avoid the horse that is the hot favourite. If a horse is the hot favourite, either the odds will be very low or the horse will be under tremendous pressure to perform.
3. Start with a bet of less than HK$100. If you win, you’ll be happy. If you lose, you won’t be too upset. Most importantly, relax and enjoy the races. As you’re a beginner, you’ll have beginner’s luck!
