Dipa Swaminathan, founder of It's Raining Raincoats gains a spot on The Impact List 2020 for her dedication and compassion to helping the community in Singapore

Dipa Swaminathan already faced a challenging mission before this year’s upending by Covid-19.

Swaminathan, an assistant general counsel for SingTel, created It’s Raining Raincoats in 2015 to raise support and compassion for the enormous population of migrant workers in Singapore. She started the initiative after witnessing incidents of inhumane conditions, such as men wearing rubbish bags to protect themselves from the rain, and seeing results when she raised her voice to complain.

“A little compassion towards them goes a long way,” Swaminathan said in a 2018 Ted Talk. “We find bridges to build between our community and theirs.”

She has arranged athletic meets with local schoolchildren, secured donations of clothing, and distributed water bottles collected from schools and unsold pastries from a network of Starbucks stores. She was given a President’s Award for philanthropy and volunteerism in 2017.

Now she is keeping the public engaged with a community that is particularly vulnerable to the pandemic’s spread. Many workers have been isolated in dormitories for weeks at a time, exposing them to far greater risks from the pandemic, so much so that the government reports daily cases separately from the general population. Swaminathan hopes to inspire change with more stories of positivity.
