The concept of the Midnight Supper traces its roots to New York City in the 1800s, when socialite Caroline Astor, the mother of St. Regis founder John Jacob Astor IV, hosted an invitation-only dinner that went late into the night. Following the opening of the St. Regis Hong Kong last month, André Fu, the hotel’s interior designer, hosted his own version of the Midnight Supper with the city’s movers and shakers, including the likes of Kamsen Lau, David Ng, and Claudine Ying, to name just a few. The evening started with a cocktail reception in the hotel’s Presidential Suite, where we spotted Feiping Chang, René Chu, and Tiffany Chan among the guests who sipped on champagne and martinis before they made their way downstairs for a group photo shot in the style of Vanity Fair. Afterwards, André led the Midnight Supper set into the Astor Ballroom, which featured a long grand dining table decorated with candles and fresh flowers, while the chandeliers and rows of lush plants cast shadows on the ballroom walls, which are reminiscent of the original St. Regis New York’s gilded spaces. Guests enjoyed a four-course menu that was created specially by executive sous chef Vincent Leroux and were treated to live jazz music throughout the evening. A highlight of the night was when André made a brief welcoming speech, introducing the story of the Midnight Supper and kicking off the evening with the dramatic sabering of champagne bottles, which was performed by chief sommelier Tristan Pommier and St. Regis hosts.
