Themed Modern Peranakan, this year's event brings together a rich cultural heritage with a modern touch through a specially curated dinner and a line-up of activities and entertainment
Kebaya, keluak, kam siah (or “thank you” in Hokkien) are just some of the words that Hossan Leong, or Nyonya Doris Tan Swee Neo in character, was given by guests to compose an impromptu song, whose performance led to much joy and laughter, at the Dover Park Hospice Virtual Sunflower Dinner 2021 on October 15.
Perhaps these same words would also describe the enjoyable Friday evening, which started with a medley of songs performed by the Dover Park Hospice (DPH) GEMS Show Choir, comprising staff and volunteers, who lent their voices to familiar Peranakan tunes such as Chan Mali Chan and Bengawan Solo.
The theme for this year’s event, the second time it was held virtually, was Modern Peranakan and the main highlight was the four-course Peranakan dinner, specially curated by Malcolm Lee of Michelin-starred restaurant Candlenut, Willin Low of Wild Rocket, and Massimo Pasquarelli of The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, delivered to the homes of the close to 320 guests, which included DPH patron Dr Tony Tan. Health minister Ong Ye Kung, who was the guest of honour, addressed guests through a recorded speech.

Despite the challenging climate brought about by the pandemic, DPH continues to give its best to its patients by upholding the provision of quality end-of-life care, while focusing on a holistic approach that involves medical, psychosocial, emotional, social and spiritual care through innovative ways.
The evening also featured a special performance by DPH ambassador Gurmit Singh as well as a host of activities related to the Peranakan culture.
Thanks to the support from its donors, sponsors and partners, DPH raised over $900,000 at the annual dinner, which will go towards providing holistic palliative care to patients and their caregivers, especially those from low-income families.
