We capture mother-daughter duo Catherine Kwai and Vanessa Wong of the Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery as they pose for Hong Kong Tatler’s May cover

For Hong Kong Tatler’s May issue, we invited mother-daughter gallerist-duo Catherine Kwai and Vanessa Wong to pose for the cover of the annual art issue. To capture the dynamic between the two and to embrace the arts this month, we drew inspiration from Irving Penn, bringing forth a cover shoot with artistic grandeur, structure and composure.

Whilst Kwai originally aspired to be an artist herself, she later found her true calling in the art world introducing international artists to Hong Kong by establishing the Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery. Today, with the all-grown-up Wong as manager, the gallery has turned their focus to the Far East, predominantly focusing on contemporary Chinese art, alongside with art from Korea and Japan. “We’ve become more like sisters or friends now,” explains 29-year-old Wong of her relationship with her mother. She continues, “We’re actually more similar than we seem. Both of us have two sides: we can be very active, like to talk, but then we can go off to read on our own”.

To see the shoot, we bring you behind-the-scenes on set with Catherine Kwai and Vanessa Wong in our exclusive video.
