The World University Rankings has released its Impact Rankings for 2021. In the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University ranks as the most impactful university. This is followed by De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Mapúa University

What do these rankings mean?

Every year, the Times Higher Education releases its list of Impact Rankings, the only global performance ranking that assesses universities against the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

There are seventeen SDG's in total that include:

  • no poverty
  • zero hunger
  • good health and well-being
  • quality education
  • gender equality
  • clean water and sanitation
  • affordable and clean energy
  • decent work and economic growth
  • industry innovation and infrastructure
  • reducing inequality
  • sustainable cities and communities
  • responsible consumption and production

  • life on land
  • peace justice and strong institutions
  • and partnerships for the goals

Significant Placers

This year, the overall ranking is led by UK university, University of Manchester. Meanwhile, the top university from an emerging economy in the 23rd place is is Chulalongkorn University from Thailand. Overall rankings include 1,115 universities across 94 territories globally. 

Something to be proud of for this year is the inclusion of five local universities on the list; the most impactful university being Ateneo de Manila University. With an overall ranking of 71.0–77.4, it currently stands between the 201-300 rank. Its best scores come from good health and wellbeing (70.1-77.6), peace, justice, and strong institutions (63.1–72.9), sustainable cities and communities (61.9-72.6), and partnerships for the goals (87.4). 

De La Salle University follows at the 401st-600th rank with an overall score of 56.6-66.2. Its best performing goals are clean water and sanitation (49.1-59.5), life below water (42.1-59), peace, justice, and strong institutions (21.6-47.3), as well as partnerships for the goals (56.3-64.7).

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Tarlac Agricultural University both share a spot around the 601st-800th averaging a total overall ranking of 47.6-56.5. Both have considerable recognition for quality education and partnerships for goals. UST also scored well in good health and well-being and affordable and clean energy while Tarlac Agricultural University came in high in gender equality and no poverty. 

Lastly, Mapúa University, which ranked between the 801st-1000th place has an overall rank of 36.5-47.5 with significant scores for clean water and sanitation, partnerships for goals, responsible consumption and production, and decent work and economic growth.
