Rebekah Lin has successfully forged a career out of helping others enjoy a better life, but the co‑founder of The Social Co, a think-tank dedicated to solving social issues in Singapore, doesn’t dwell on past achievements. “I’m grateful that I have been able to make a difference, but I constantly remind myself that it’s not about how much we’ve done, but how we can do more,” says the chirpy 32-year-old, who counts her mother, former politician Lim Hwee Hua, as her greatest role model.

If one’s drink of choice is a reflection of character, Rebekah’s double shot gin and tonic can tell you much about her zest for life and commitment to making a change, particularly in the areas of mental wellness and suicide.

Armed with novel ideas and creative ways of spreading awareness—thanks to her penchant for reading and openness to meeting new people—Rebekah considers her work as an extension of her lifestyle. “When you really like doing something, it won’t feel like a job. It’d just be like what you do in your free time, such as watching a movie or going out for drinks.”

“At The Social Co, we’re currently working on Pledge It Forward, a campaign to raise 10,000 pledges of any amount for 51 lesser-known charities. The goal isn’t about the amount raised, but about encouraging people to give while rallying the younger generation who are looking for meaning and purpose in life.”

“Travelling gives me perspective. When I was a photojournalist with World Vision between 2009 and 2011, I visited Ethiopia, Bangladesh and India and realised how blessed we were in Singapore. It made me even more grateful for what I had and taught me to focus on the bigger picture.”

“My idea of a socially conscious society starts with everyday actions such as saying hello to a neighbour or doing something nice for others. My mum once told me that we should do this because we want to, not because we’re expecting something in return.”

“I may be easy to talk to, but I’m definitely afraid of coming across as vulnerable when opening up to others. It’s a two-way street though; sharing also paves the way for a more authentic friendship and working relationship, and I’ve been able to learn a lot from listening to others share about their own experiences.”

Above Give back

“If you’re looking to start giving back to society, first identify the causes that really matter to you. Knowing how and where to channel your impact is next. You could start small by donating to a charity. When you feel comfortable enough, consider volunteering with the causes you support.”
