From mischief-making pooches who chew on Patek Philippe watches to classy cats who love a massage, meet some of the city’s most pampered pets
Writer Diana d’Arenberg’s nine-month-old husky.
Best outfit? This Halloween, Laika was the grandma wolf in Little Red Riding Hood.
Biggest treat? “We had a nice big comfy bed made for her and shipped over from Germany, as well as a leather collar and leash from a fetish leather specialist in Berlin. As you do,” says Diana.
Entrepreneur Claudine Ying’s 10-year-old poodle.
Most endearing habit? A paw tap, which is Barksdale's way of asking nicely for you to pet him.
Favourite outfit? “I used to dress him up in a qipao for Chinese New Year, but he’s too old for that now,” says Claudine.
Marketing maven Ingrid Chen and entrepreneur Thierry Mandonnaud’s seven-year-old French bulldog.
Biggest indulgence? His Louis Vuitton collar, given to him by stylist Sean Kunjambu.
Favourite food? “He loves bread,” says Thierry. “That might be his French side. Or it might be the fact that our daughter shares her tartines with him.”
Financier Alby Chung’s two-year-old Samoyed.
Biggest indulgence? A Sealy Posturepedic Cal King bed. It was for Alby, but it’s Tofu’s now.
Best memory? Alby took Tofu to The Pulse one evening when she was a pup. Letting her off the leash was not a good decision. “She dove straight into the water,” says Alby. “Guess who took a late-night swim to fish her out?”
7. Luke Boka and Jasper Stormey
Entrepreneur Elson Luk’s four-year-old French bulldog and three-year-old Pomeranian.
Best outfits? “I get them outfits when I see cute ones. My favourites are their kimonos that I got in Tokyo,” says Elson.
Biggest indulgence? Elson also bought some Hermès silk pocket squares for Luke Boca and Jasper Stormey to wear as bandanas around their necks.
8. Barney, Ollie, Minou and Velocity
A flood of furry affection welcomes guests stepping into Francisco Anton-Serrano’s Sai Ying Pun office. There are two bear-like Chow Chows—eight-year- old Barney (right) and seven-year-old Ollie, 15-year-old Persian Minky (short for Minou, which is French for kitty) and two-year-old cat Velocity.
Any plans to expand the clan? “My new year’s resolution was no more pets. Though it’s very tempting,” Francisco says.
10. Nugget and Milo
Stylist Sena Wakabayashi’s three-year-old twin golden retrievers.
Best memory? “My favourite time with the dogs was when I was pregnant,” says Sena. “They were by my side all the time, and I could feel they were super tuned in to what was happening. Milo would sleep outside the bedroom door every night, and Nugget on the floor next to the bed without fail.”
Favourite toys? Sena is constantly on the search for indestructible toys—they chew through most toys in an hour.
11. Mr. Bean
Consultant Jasmine Chung’s four-year-old pug.
Naughtiest moment? When Jasmine was still studying at New York University, she came home from class one day and found Mr. Bean chewing her red Birkin. He nearly bit the handle off.
Significant other? Back in New York, he used to have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for a boyfriend.
12. Tony & Tina
Actress and environmentalist Sharon Kwok-Pong's pair of Argentinian giant tegus.
Pet personality? “Tegus are sweethearts,” says Sharon, who founded the Aqua Meridian Foundation, which runs programmes to educate Hongkongers about sustainability and the importance of biodiversity. “Tony is friendly, while Tina is shy,” Sharon explains.
Favourite food? “They eat fruit like grapes, cantaloupe and bananas, but also meat or insects, sometimes even kitty kibble.”
Restaurateur Pearl Shek’s 11-year-old pug.
Funniest habit? No matter how late Pearl goes to bed, Yogi tries to stay up with her. “I can see him struggling every night trying to stay awake,” says Pearl. “He waits for me to climb into bed first, and then he’ll follow.”
Nickname? Pearl calls him Follower—and for a very good reason. “He follows me everywhere I go when I’m at home,” she says. “When I’m walking around, showering, sleeping, he’s there—all the time.”
Entrepreneur Angie Ting’s two-year-old Shiba.
Naughtiest moment? Swifty chewed up Angie’s children’s homework—twice. Informing the teachers was embarrassing.
Favourite memory? Angie was eating dinner one night, turned around for a second and Swifty ate all the rice off her plate. “The look on her face when I caught her was hilarious,” says Angie.
15. Chikita Chanel Hung
Chef Mina Park’s 18-month-old dog.
Average day? “Nelinha lives the LA lifestyle I dream of,” says Mina. “She eats only organic, gluten-free food, lounges in her Saarinen womb chair and regularly hikes to the beach.”
Significant other? Nelinha has a boyfriend named Axel Wolfgang Wong. They go on dates together to the doggie park.
17. Simba and Orion
Entrepreneur Kevin Poon’s five-year-old rescue dog and four-year-old miniature Yorkshire terrier.
Nickname? Simba is also called Fay Chu (Fat Pig) because he was such a chubby puppy when Kevin adopted him.
Best memory? “Every day is a new memory. I love them,” says Kevin.
18. Xiao Fung Tan
Chef Esther Sham’s seven-year-old Shih Tzu.
Favourite accessory? Her Hermès collar.
Best memory? Once Esther snuck Xiao Fung into the movies. “At first we were worried she might bark, but she actually fell asleep,” recalls Esther. “Her snoring was so loud that it sounded like it was coming from a man.”
19. Sean Kunjambu's zoo
Who's in the crew? As well as four tortoises, Sean’s menagerie includes four dogs and more than 20 snakes, including this ball python. Our shoot had to be carefully coordinated with the snake’s meal schedule. “He eats a mouse once a week, but they stop eating during winter, so he’s slowing down,” stylist Sean Kunjambu explains, “I don’t want him to miss a meal.”
Favourite food? “The reason I moved to the apartment I'm in now was so that my tortoises could eat the grass outside,” says Sean, gesturing to the strip of lawn next to his terrace. “Because of pesticides in public areas, you have to be so careful about the grass they eat.”
Entrepreneur Yolanda Choy-Tang’s two-year-old Samoyed.
Sweetest moment? Olaf keeps Yolanda’s kids company when they’re studying and lets them lie on him when they’re watching TV.
Natural habitat? “When he visits the groomers—he spends more time at the salon than I do,” says Yolanda.
Influencer Feiping Chang’s eight-month-old poodle.
Favourite food? “He literally eats anything,” says Feiping. “When he was on medication, the vet told me to mix his meds into food to hide the unpleasant taste, but Pumpkin just straight up ate it. That’s why I’m selective about his food. He’s only fed all-natural, freeze-dried, grain-free food that I mix into a porridge for him with Nova Scotia seaweed powder."
Biggest indulgence? Freeze-dried salmon, deer liver or beef tendons. "My husband jokingly complains that Pumpkin eats better than he does,” Feiping quips.
22. Drew Barrymore
Lifelong animal lover and financier Lumen Kinoshita's African pygmy hedgehog, Drew Barrymore.
Place of residence? Drew lives in a two-storey hamster cage, but will shuffle out to socialise if you offer him a handful of his favourite snack—hamster food.
Pet personality? “He’s a bit moody, but he’s generally an easy pet,” says Lumen. So how do you spoil such a laidback animal? “We bathe him using a toothbrush twice a week.”
Lawyer Vena Cheng’s three-year-old cat.
Favourite food? “She only eats Japanese cat food, which we get shipped to Hong Kong regularly,” says Vena.
Cutest habit? Mimi always runs up to Vena when she comes through the door, rubs against her legs, then waits patiently to be picked up and cuddled.
