2016 in review: Memorable birthday bashes

Another year has seen grand and memorable birthday celebrations from some of society's most colourful personalities and their children. Themed parties were especially frequent, amongst the young and the young at heart. Tunku Azalea went for something more ‘Maleficent’ while her cousin (and her parents) Puteri Tahlia Jaafar-Greaves threw a pool party for all her friends. Shirieene Hajamaideen threw a 'Rock Royalty' birthday bash while Datin Winnie Loo had a fancy ‘Hollywood Glam’ party for her 60th birthday. Tan Sri AK Nathan took a step back to the ‘Swinging Sixties’ for his own 60th. Tun Dr Siti Hasmah also celebrated her 90th birthday , while another national matriarch, Queen Elizabeth II reached a similar milestone. Other memorable parties include Ruben and Shaline Gnanalingam's destination birthday, Lee Jim Leng and Vivienne Cheng’s Fendi luncheon and Dato’ Rosemarie Wee’s revival of the 'Wigs & ‘Stache' party.

2016 provided another year of memorable birthdays.

It was an afternoon filled with joy and laughter for Puteri Tahlia Jaafar-Greaves and her friends as she celebrated her 6th birthday in a splashing pool party.

Taking full advantage of Kuala Lumpur’s sunny weather, the pool party was accompanied by a huge water slide, giant bubbles and rounds of games including a dance off.

Her cousin Tunku Azalea, pictured here with her parents, Tunku Mohamed Alauddin Naquiyuddin and Puteri Badrinise Zakuan-Alauddin, and her sister, Tunku Alaynna, celebrated a Maleficent themed party.

Proud parents SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin and Marion Caunter saw to it that their youngest and only son Liam Naza Nasarudin turned one with much flair with a ‘Wild Wild West’ party.

Kids and kids at heart up in their finest Western American attire for a rootin’ tootin’ good time.

All the grown cowboys, like Azlan Iskandar, got to live out their rodeo fantasies.

Dato' Sri Andrew and Datin Sri Chris Abishegam's twin daughters, Alia and Alexa, turned 16 in true style with a birthday bash like no other at Zouk Club KL.

The twins also took the opportunity to introduce their new charity initiative, Project 16/16, with which they hope to raise funds and support 16 local charity homes and another 16 abroad.

Fireworks lit up the night sky at the end of the party.

Shirieene Hajamaideen celebrated all things rock and roll with ample leather, studs and red roses making up the bulk of the decor.

Guests, like Khoon Hooi signed their well wishes on the mirrors with pink lipstick provided.

Shirieene embraced her inner rock goddess.

Her husband, Ruben Gnanalingam celebrated his own birthday, shared with his sister, Shaline in Canggu with family & friends.

The two day celebration culminated on a 'Corn' themed party that featured plenty of corny jokes.

Fendi made sure to make two of their VIP guests, Lee Jim Leng and Vivienne Cheng, feel extra special on their birthdays with a dedicated birthday luncheon.

Datin Winnie Loo and her family celebrated her 60th with a 'Hollywood Glam' themed party.

It was a happy affair that also saw a fashion show and surprise performance by Crystal Lee and Dennis Lau.

Tan Sri AK Nathan celebrated his own 60th birthday in style with a 'Swinging Sixties' bash.

But Tan Sri took care of the entertainment himself with a surprise rendition of the Bee Gees' hit song 'Words'

Dato’ Rosemarie Wee revived the 'Wigs & ‘Stache' party.

The party gave her dearest friends a chance to let their hair down and put their wigs up.

Dato' Jimmy Choo, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Michele Liew and Dato’ Wan Hashim Wan Jusuh were among the Malaysians celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday.

Although the Queen herself was not in attendance, another British icon, the Great London Bus managed to make it.

Our own national matriarch, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah celebrated a glorious 90th birthday surrounded by all the love of her family.

The celebrations also saw her introduce her new book, 'My Name is Hasmah', that chronicles her life and times in a collection of heart-warming short stories.

Not even her husband, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad could steal her limelight that day.

The grand occasion was highlighted by heartfelt speeches by her children as well as endearing performances by her grandchildren.

The whole family assembled to help Tun Dr Siti Hasmah blow out her birthday candles.
