Home to fantastic harbours and beautiful coastlines, Hong Kong has no lack of opportunities for a fun day on the waters. Here are five yacht clubs in Hong Kong that offer a wide variety of courses for both adults and children, members and non-members, under the Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) syllabus.

Aberdeen Boat Club

Featuring a wide range of facilities spreading over two clubhouses for yacht, speed boat and cruiser enthusiasts, the Aberdeen Boat Club offers direct access to the seas off the southern side of Hong Kong Island, with jetty and pontoon moorings available for members’ exclusive use.

With well-designed sailing training programmes on offer, the club also has private tuition options together with other water sports including kayaking, windsurfing and scuba diving. Serious sailers can consider taking their keelboat J80 course, designed for those interested in learning how to sail on a 26-foot keelboat J80 as well as big boat racers looking for a more hands-on experience.

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

One of the oldest and largest sports clubs in Hong Kong, The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) has a history that spans 170 years of community and competitive sailing and rowing. 

Open to both members and non-members, beginners to athletes, the club specialises in a 5-day practical course recognised by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation, sailing RS Quest and Fusion dinghies from Middle Island. 

RHKYC also has one-day supervised sailing sessions for those who want to improve or need a refresher on certain areas, such as boat handling, distance sails and racing. For children and teenagers, they have youth courses and also run week-long courses over the holiday seasons.

Hebe Haven Yacht Club

Set in the picturesque bay of Pak Sha Wan in Sai Kung, The Hebe Haven Yacht Club offers first-class boating facilities and some of the best sailing waters and beaches surrounded by beautiful coastlines and nearby island Port Shelter. 

Sailing courses recognised by Hong Kong Sailing Federation are open to members and non-members, but a membership promises exclusive benefits such as full access to the club’s restaurant, bar and The Balcony and The Garden Bar.

Best known for its Typhoon Series racing event, the club organises one of the biggest summer regattas in Hong Kong, attracting a significant number of water sports and boating enthusiasts every year.

Hong Kong Hobie Club

Taking pride in To Tei Wan as its home turf, the Hong Kong Hobie Club organises races, training sessions and social events every other weekend. Home to two main types of boat, Hobie 16s and Formula 18 Hobie Tigers and Wildcats, the clubhouse has boating facilities for 70 catamarans. 

Members of the club are encouraged to participate in inter-club regattas in Hong Kong from September to November, as well as the bi-weekly races and training practices that take to the waters in Tai Tam Bay.

Lantau Boat Club

With a prime location on the beach in Discovery Bay, Lantau Boat Club caters for non-powered water sports, specifically sailing, paddling and coastal rowing.

The members-only club offers two sailing boat types, catamarans and dinghies, with a large fleet of Dart 18s, Hobie 16s, and Formula boats (F18s and F16s) available for charter. While the club focuses on social sails and cruises, specialist short courses such as boat handling training, sailing and principles training are also available, so be sure to check their schedule for updates.
