Need another reason to hit the gym? A new study shows that people who do weight training are 20 to 30 per cent less likely to become obese

Looking to manage your weight? Lifting weights a few times a week may help us avoid obesity, according to a new study on resistance training and body fat. If you’ve been trying to gain motivation to head back to the gym since Covid-19 hit, this new study may inspire you to pick up the weights once again.

The study, which was published in June, researchers at Iowa State University and other institutes tried to find the link between resistance training, aerobic exercise, and the risk of developing obesity.

While plenty of studies have confirmed aerobic exercises such as running, brisk walking or jogging can prevent obesity, little has been proven whether resistance training provides the same benefits prior to this study.

To find out, researchers located 11,938 adults without obesity with varying demographic and lifestyle habits to participate in resistance and aerobic exercises for an average of six years. Afterward, the data were analyzed by researchers, comparing individuals who did not perform resistance exercises (71 per cent of participants) to those who did resistance training one to two hours a week or at least two days a week.

Researchers found that people who regularly do weight-training exercises of any kind are 20 to 30 per cent less likely to become obese when compared to people who do not have resistance training in their routine, regardless of whether they also do aerobic exercises.

However, factors such as the individuals’ diets, genetics, and other lifestyle habits were not observed in the study, which could also contribute to one's obesity risk. In previous studies, weight lifting has been shown to burn more calories in the long run due to an increase in muscle mass. Excited to add weights to your routine?
