Think Sundays are off days? Think again. Hong Kong personal trainer Jason Sinarwi is the founder of Sunday Shred HK, a community group fitness class that takes place every Sunday at Tamar Park. Combining sprints, circuits, strength and endurance, the Sunday Shred HK community has grown steadily since its founding over a year ago. We hit the gym with Jason to discover the how his fitness journey began, a sport he’s yet to try and why he doesn’t believe in cheat meals.
When did you first start working out?
I was 18 when I first walked into a gym. It was small, hot, filled with rusty barbells, and smelled of sweat and metal. I loved it.
Describe a typical week of workouts for you:
I powerlift twice a week, bodybuild three times a week, and play basketball or HIIT/sprints one to two times a week. It’s important to challenge the mind and body in different ways.
What is your favourite workout, class or exercise?
My favourite exercise has got to be the deadlift. Aside from being one of the most beneficial exercises human beings could physically do, the moment of fear before a big lift, the adrenaline during, and the rush of satisfaction after a successful lift makes it very addicting.
How do you stay motivated?
I used to want to look good naked. Then, I wanted to be the strongest and baddest in the room. Now that I’ve achieved both, I just want to be healthy. I’m thinking long term now, for myself and for others. Quality food, cholesterol levels, hormone balance, sleep, injury prevention all mean more to me now than they did before.
