Think Sundays are off days? Think again. Hong Kong personal trainer Jason Sinarwi is the founder of Sunday Shred HK, a community group fitness class that takes place every Sunday at Tamar Park. Combining sprints, circuits, strength and endurance, the Sunday Shred HK community has grown steadily since its founding over a year ago. We hit the gym with Jason to discover the how his fitness journey began, a sport he’s yet to try and why he doesn’t believe in cheat meals.

When did you first start working out?

I was 18 when I first walked into a gym. It was small, hot, filled with rusty barbells, and smelled of sweat and metal. I loved it.

Describe a typical week of workouts for you:

I powerlift twice a week, bodybuild three times a week, and play basketball or HIIT/sprints one to two times a week. It’s important to challenge the mind and body in different ways.

What is your favourite workout, class or exercise?

My favourite exercise has got to be the deadlift. Aside from being one of the most beneficial exercises human beings could physically do, the moment of fear before a big lift, the adrenaline during, and the rush of satisfaction after a successful lift makes it very addicting.

How do you stay motivated?

I used to want to look good naked. Then, I wanted to be the strongest and baddest in the room. Now that I’ve achieved both, I just want to be healthy. I’m thinking long term now, for myself and for others. Quality food, cholesterol levels, hormone balance, sleep, injury prevention all mean more to me now than they did before.

What do you wear when working out? Any fave brands or stores?

Nothing feels more badass and primal than lifting weights without your shirt on. But if I had to, my top would be a stretchy Nike or Lululemon tank. For the bottom, I have yet to find a pair of shorts than don’t rip when I squat.

What does your cheat day look like?

I don’t believe in cheat days. I think the whole idea is stupid. Why cheat yourself out of success? Best form realistic eating and exercise habits that will sustain you until you’re old and grey. I keep my diet pretty clean on a regular basis, but I will still enjoy the occasional burger and beer with the boys.

What’s on your workout playlist?

Lots of rap, trap, and Hip Hop from 90-2000s. You know, anything that will give you the edge in a bar brawl. Message me privately for some sick tunes.

Favourite healthy foods and restaurants?

I like bananas. The texture, the taste, the quick energy. For restaurants, I’ve been going to Brunch Club on Peel Street for years. Their food is simple, clean and consistent. Not to mention they feed me complimentary coffee.

How do you stay fit while travelling?

I never travel to a place without a gym. Exploring new studios and gym facilities is part of the whole experience for me. However, if no gym around, I’ll create my own home workout usually consisting of body weight strength exercises, HIIT, ab and core exercises.

Advice on starting a fitness regime?

Don’t be fooled by the “30-day get-ripped-quick” programs companies try to sell, and unfollow all your ridiculous “Instamodels” on Instagram. They do nothing but pressure you into setting unrealistic standards for yourself. Think long term.

Create a lifestyle which includes regular exercise and smart eating habits. Then get up off your a** and do it. Learn what works and what doesn’t work for you, then adjust accordingly. You’re not competing with anyone else but you.

A sport you’ve never tried but want to?

Mixed martial arts. I have the utmost respect for these guys who train and fight for a living. They are modern day gladiators. Can you imagine being in a cage with someone who’s sole purpose is to destroy you? Politics go out the window, and primal instincts kick in. It’s basically man on survival mode. Truly fascinating.

Morning or evening workouts?

I function best in the gym in the early afternoon, after I’ve already had two meals and two coffees. I just cannot put a sentence together in the morning.

Who is your Fitspiration or sporting hero?

I generally don’t follow anyone I don’t know on a personal level, unless they provide some form information, education, or entertainment which adds value to my life and work. One guy I do follow is Eliot Hulse. His training, his philosophy, his advice on lifting and life always gives me perspective on dealing with my own issues—both inside and outside of the gym.

Best Fitstagram (fitness Instagram) to follow?

Aside from Elliot Hulse, it would be @squat_university. This guy drops gems on a daily basis—a lot of which has helped me improve my own technique and teaching capacity. Great value for your time especially if you’re in the lifting game for the long run.
