Gyms may have reopened in Hong Kong, but those looking to work up a sweat still have to wear a face mask while exercising, so we're listing seven face masks that feature lightweight and breathable materials––perfect for your next workout
As of September 4, gyms in Hong Kong were able to reopen after being closed since mid-July to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Hong Kong. But although fitness centres across the city have opened their doors once more, those wishing to get back to their usual routine still have to wear a face mask while working out in line with the current social distancing restrictions.
While we’ve been accustomed to wearing masks day-to-day for many months now, wearing one while working up a sweat is a whole different ball game. Many in Hong Kong wear surgical face masks, but with exercise these can become damp and make it harder to breathe––with the dampness also promoting bacterial growth which may lead to problems such as maskne. Because of this, masks made with breathable fabrics, similar to those used in activewear such as spandex and polyester are your best bet, or you can opt for masks made from natural materials, as these will likely be both more comfortable and make it easier to breathe.
Here we list seven lightweight and breathable face masks to wear while working out in the gym.
Organic Bamboo Face Masks by Bamboa
Made from 100% bamboo fibre, Bamboo's reusable face masks are an eco-friendly option that are great for working out.
Although the masks don't feature a filter, they are made from three layers of bamboo fabric––which has a naturally tight weave––to offer enough protection for your workout. Bamboo fibre is naturally antibacterial and inhibits bacterial growth, with the material also feeling soft and silky on the skin, as well as being breathable.
What's more, the masks are hand-sewn in Hong Kong and are available in a range of colours.

Uniqlo Airism Face Mask
Launching in Hong Kong this month, Uniqlo's Airism Face Mask sold out within hours when it first launched in Japan.
Designed using the brand's Airism Comfort Conditioning Technology which it uses in many of its clothing items, the fabric is designed to disperse moisture, release heat and wick away sweat––making it perfect for everyday use in hot and humid climates, and especially-suited for working out at the gym.
Available in white, grey and black in sizes small, medium and large, the Airism face masks come in packs of three and can be machine washed up to twenty times.
Named after the Japanese word for wind, Kaze masks promise to be both lightweight and breathable.
Modelled with the art of origami in mind, the masks fold when flat and when pop to create a 3D mask that holds its shape. The cleverly-designed structure tents over your
nose and mouth keeping it at a comfortable distance, and helping you to breathe easy. The 5-layer construction has also been created to maximise airflow while blocking out dust, germs, and particles.
The masks are designed for single use, and are available in 12 colourful shades.
Onzie Mindful Mask
Made from up-cycled fabrics used to make the brand's yoga clothing, Onzie's Mindful Mask's multi-layer fabric Full Flex Spandex promises to be quick-drying and breathable.
The stretchy fabric also ensures that your mask stays in place while you're working out, with the reviews attesting to just how comfortable they are to wear––labelled as "like yoga pants for your face".
Caraa Sport Mask
Caraa's Sport Mask was designed––as the name would suggest––especially for wearing while exercising.
The mask features a handy toggle on its straps to ensure the wearer gets a snug fit, with the built in mouth wire allowing you to breath easy by providing a comfortable distance between the mask and your mouth. While the lining is made of 100% cotton for comfort, the masks then feature a built-in pouch to fit the Caraa Sport Filter, and is then topped with a mesh outer layer made from moisture-wicking polyester.
The masks are available in a range if colours, including a variety of neutral and neon designs.
