That showstopping Cartier necklace will surely turn heads

People are excited about the upcoming Ocean’s 8 movie for a number of reasons:  the fact that it’s an all-female spinoff of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Trilogy, the high-calibre cast headlined by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, the glamourous Met Gala heist plot, and of course, Rihanna!

Another thing you can get excited about—if you are a lover of all things fancy—is the amount of jewellery that’s present in this movie. That’s all thanks to Cartier who serves as the exclusive jewellery partner of Ocean’s 8. Remember that stunner on Anne Hathaway’s neck as she walks up the steps of The Met? The piece, which is a tribute to Cartier’s most influential creative director Jeanne Toussaint, was especially recreated by the Maison to serve a pivotal role in the movie. Cartier’s best jewellers got to work on recreating the Toussaint within eight weeks.

Originally, the Toussaint was designed in 1931 for the Maharaja of Nawanagar by Jacques Cartier. Described as “the finest cascade of colored diamonds in the world,” it was, according to Jacques Cartier, “a superb realization of a connoisseur’s dream.”

The piece no longer exists, but Cartier dug through its archives for design sketches and photographs to recreate the necklace. Since it was initially designed to be worn by a man, the necklace was adjusted to fit Hathaway perfectly. Dismountable bezels were devised to successfully adapt the jewel to match Anne’s proportions.  For the film, the coloured diamonds were replaced with zirconium oxides mounted on white gold.

Cartier also supplied the jewellery for cameo appearances, taken from the Cartier Collection, the New and High Jewellery, as well as the watches and accessories collections.
