The new building in Plan-les-Ouates will carry Patek Philippe through to its future legacies

In 2015, Patek Philippe had commissioned the creation of a new production house in the outskirts of Geneva, at Plan-les-Ouates. Amid the rolling green mountains of the Swiss countryside, the house of haute horologerie has created a multi-level building that aims to unite its artisans and experts under one roof. Given the growing complexity of modern production operations, this is seen as a great advantage, especially in anticipation of the brand's growth in the next two or three decades.

The new building, which took half a decade to complete, reasserts Patek Philippe's Genevan roots and quite literally, brings their artistry back home. Boasting ten storeys, four of which are subterranean, the new building is a showcase of modern architecture that serves to accentuate the landscape of Plan-les-Ouates. The details of the building are intricate, many of which pay homage to earlier Patek Philippe designs: horizontal curves, silhouetted ladders, and other such subtleties are delicate, yet distinct reminders of the brand's design strategies. All floors are dedicated to quality production that has made Patek Philippe so distinguished. The building is crowned, on the fifth floor, by a penthouse restaurant that can accommodate over a thousand guests, along with four VIP lounges and a panoramic view of the landscape.

In honour of its new atelier, Patek Philippe is launching a commemorative watch called the Ref. 6007A-001 Calatrava. It's been tradition within the company to accompany milestones with commemorative pieces. In 1997, Patek Philippe launched the Ref. 5500 Pagoda and the Ref. 5029 Minute Repeater to highlight the inauguration of the new manufacture, also in Plan-les-Ouates.

The new Calatrava comes in polished steel, which is quite rare in Patek Philippe collections. The hour circle features triangular markers and and a railway track scale, accentuated by pierced baton hands for the hours and minutes. The calfskin strap which comes with the watch is designed with white decorative seams, a prong buckle, and delicately embossed structure to match the dial centre.

Only 1,000 pieces of this new watch will be made. Each of these one thousand will be specially marked with the "New Manufacture 2019" inscription, which was when the first group of craftsmen moved into the new building.
