Introducing Chopard's Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Zagato 100th Anniversary Edition
It was spring in Kyoto, specifically the idyllic setting of Tenryu-ji Temple. For a couple of days, this location provided temporary sanctuary for a fleet of fine cars bearing the Zagato signature. The event was the Concours d'Elegance gathering of car lovers organised by Japanese artist Hidetomo Kimura with a special tribute to Zagato that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
It was thus fitting that Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, co-president of Chopard and a racing enthusiast himself, had chosen this occasion to announce his company’s partnership with Zagato as well as unveil a new watch celebrating this union. Chopard has been the official sponsor of Mille Miglia since 1988 and beginning this year, it will also sponsor Zagato in its 25th attempt at the race, which it has won eight times previously.
Designed to witness all the action behind the wheels at Mille Miglia, the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Zagato 100th Anniversary Edition immediately catches the eye with its deep red lacquered dial decorated with the emblematic ‘Z ‘pattern of Zagato. Besides a small seconds counter at ‘3’, there are the chronograph minute sub-dial at ‘9’ and the hours at ‘6’, adorned in a red achieved by galvanic treatment. The date aperture is found between ‘4’ and 5’.
The aluminium inner bezel sports the tachymeter scale that can be used to calculate the average speed during the race. The shape of the 42mm stainless steel case recalls the perfect roundness of vintage stopwatches, and it is paired with a bund leather strap for extra sportiness.
Complementing the robust exterior is a COSC-certified automatic movement beating at 4Hz and boasting a power reserve of 42 hours. This one-off edition is limited to 100 pieces.
