As Chopard enters into its 20th year of partnership with the festival, we recall the milestone moments that made the event what it is today. 

For 70 years now, the Cannes Film Festival has captivated millions of audiences worldwide with the glamorous gala of cinema and celebrity. But beyond the glittering surface, a meaningful bond runs deep through an enduring partnership between the festival and Swiss jeweller Chopard.

Famous for embellishing stars in dazzling jewels and diamonds on their red carpet appearances, Chopard’s impressive role in this union has produced some of the most symbolic milestones the festival has seen. Each year, Chopard sends a ripple of delight through pinnacle moments and powerful creations the festival has ever seen.

When sparks fly

A partnership was kindled in 1998 when Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele was commissioned by then festival president Pierre Viot, to redesign the iconic Palme d’Or. The upgraded trophy made a lasting impression upon its international unveil and thus marked the start of an enduring union led by both the brands' common vision of creativity, beauty and excellence.

Throughout the years, Chopard flourished in its role creating many symbolic breakthroughs, most notably in 2001 when Caroline introduced the Trophée Chopard award to rising actors and actresses. Luminaries of this honour that include Audrey Tautou, Diane Kruger and Jack O’Connell have made legendary appearances on the Cannes red carpet decked out in the finest Chopard pieces. 

A collection for the Red Carpet 

To celebrate the festival’s 60th anniversary and its 10-year partnership, Chopard unveiled the Red Carpet Collection featuring 60 high jewellery pieces in 2007. Designed to gild and adorn the beautiful actresses on their ceremonial ‘mounting the steps’ arrivals, the enchanting models ranged from precious to fine stones in a dazzling array of colours and materials. 

Ever since, the collection has grown by one each year as a symbolic mark for each  festival edition. This year, the collection has amassed 70 one-of-a-kind creations with vivid colours illustrating the high jewellery atelier’s expertise. Modern interpretations of chandelier earrings, multi-coloured gemstones, arabesque cuff bracelets and gem-encrusted rings in a kaleidoscope of colour sum up the exquisite union.

 Ethical luxury 

In 2013, Chopard took on an ethical role by launching the Journey to Sustainable Luxury project. The festival was the elected starting point, where Caroline unveiled its first Green Carpet Collection ethical high jewellery of an exquisite set of cuff bracelet and matching earrings. First worn by Marion Cotillard, the gold is certified Fairmined and set with diamonds acknowledged by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). 

 The following year, Chopard revisited the Palme d’Or with an ethical intention. From 2014 onward, the iconic trophy was designed with 118 grams of 18-carat Fairmined certified gold leaf echoing the jeweller’s commitment to sustainable luxury.

Guided by a crystal clear vision to promote the awareness of sustainable luxury within the industry, Chopard has established its conscious commitment, in no better place than through its profound connection to the Cannes Film Festival.
