Ever since Richard Mille paved the way for the first watch with a case entirely in sapphire crystal, other watch manufactures have followed suit to take advantage of the material’s crystal clear profile. Owing to the extreme difficulty and complexity in machining sapphire crystal, it remains uncommon to find a watch with this case. But after it is successfully machined, sapphire crystal is extremely tough - the only other material harder that it is diamond.
1. Girard-Perregaux Quasar
Launched at the recent Miami Watches & Wonders 2019, Quasar has the distinction of being Girard-Perregaux’s first watch with a case entirely made out of sapphire crystal.
The 45mm case reveals the architectural Neo Tourbillon with Three Bridges in all its openworked glory. The GP09400-1035 automatic movement is built without a mainplate, creating the illusion of “floating” arched bridges, which are titanium that has been sandblasted and treated with black PVD.
