Deceptively conservative, the new Patrimony tourbillon is a high-powered complication blessed with fastidious finishing and stamina

It says a lot about Vacheron Constantin’s adherence to traditional haute horlogerie values when the watch it premieres ahead of this year’s Geneva watch fair is a no-nonsense and back-to-basics tourbillon complication.

And mind you, we say ‘back-to-basics’ in the most flattering way. Eschewing mind-boggling, multi-functional grand complications, the new Patrimony Traditionelle 14-Day Tourbillon, which simply boast the said gravity-correcting mechanism, might appear immensely understated in comparison. However, there is nothing lackadaisical or underwhelming about the watch.

For one, the timepiece, anchored by an exquisitely finished tourbillon carriage in the shape of the firm’s signature Maltese Cross, boasts a staggering 14-day power reserve – one of the longest power reserves in any tourbillon watch. This is made possible by four mainspring barrels in the brand’s new in-house hand-winding movement that provide the necessary torque.

In addition, the hand-wound Calibre 2260 is Vacheron Constantin’s movement first to meet the new, updated standards of the Geneva Seal, which now stipulates quality not just for the movement, but for the entire watch. (The Geneva Seal is awarded by the Geneva School of Watchmaking, which inspects and certifies the quality of high-end watches made in the city.

Credit to the watch’s designers, they have opted to present its stellar achievements in a subtle and refined manner; adorning the timepiece with a classical round case, elegant hands and hour markers, and a simple power reserve display that exalts the movements massive stamina to counterbalance the majestic tourbillon at 6 o’clock.
