Enjoy a risqué encounter with these sexually explicit timepieces

Sex sells, even in the world of haute horology. Want proof? Take a look at the Richard Mille Erotic Tourbillon RM 69, commonly known as the RM sex watch, which pop sensation Drake flashed at the NBA Playoffs in 2019. With three monochrome panels on the watch face resembling vintage billboards that used to show film titles at the cinemas, the timepiece rotates through erotic messages—and Drake’s was set to “I’d love to kiss your p***y”.

Other celebrities have also embraced the trend, such as rapper Travis Scott who wore the same  provocative piece to  a public event, revealing himself to be one of the 30 owners of this very limited-edition RM 69 watch. The timepiece, which was first launched in 2015, is said to have been inspired by a desire to express passion, and pays tribute to the erotic watches of the 16th century that were banned for being too overt.

Indeed, sexually explicit timepieces are not a modern concept. They  gained momentum in France during the reign of Louis XV in the 1700s, and were etched onto the caseback of pocket watches commissioned by the nobility and affluent socialites of that time. However, as their popularity grew, they came under the wrath of orthodox Christian clergymen who decreed that these items be banned for their lewdness.

These watches were all but forgotten by the 20th century, but watchmaker Ulysse Nardin used their allure to flee the quartz crisis of the 1970s, a notorious period in watch history. The demand for mechanical watches, which were traditionally produced by the Swiss watchmaking industry, fell precipitously after quartz movements became commonplace for use in watches. An X-rated twist on Ulysse Nardin’s Classico model was one of the items that supported the company during this difficult period. The 18-karat rose gold caseback of the watch was embossed with depictions of acts of pleasure. Following its success, Nardin launched a number of erotic models, including the Classic Voyeur watch and the Classico Manara series inspired by watercolour paintings created in collaboration with Milo Manara, an Italian artist of erotic graphic novels.

However, Ulysse Nardin was not alone in these experimentations. Other top horology houses have also been teasing—and pleasing—watch lovers with titillating creations; such as Jacob & Co’s Rasputin Diamond Erotic Minute Repeater. Conor McGregor, a mixed martial artist, also made headlines after visiting the Jacob & Co showroom where he reportedly purchased two watches in one transaction. One of his purchases was the Rasputin Diamond Erotic Minute Repeater, which raised many eyebrows, and then some questions.

At first glance, the bling piece looks like any other bejewelled watch, albeit with a motif of two swans joining together over a baguette-cut diamond paved dial on an 18-karat white gold case. The minute repeater feature is visible at nine o’clock and a hand-engraved curtain-like detail can be found at six o’clock. With one push of a lever, the curtain is pulled back on a rather colourful scene of a man and a woman in pleasure. There are only five pieces of this model in the world.

Meanwhile, Chopard’s Erotic Series balances traditional watchmaking sophistication with sensual undertones. The coral inlay and graceful curves of the 18-karat yellow gold watch are deceptively innocent in appearance, but flip it over and the underside of the tonneau-shaped caseback reveals explicit imagery of a couple in a state of undress.

Similarly loaded with graphic imagery is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso à Eclipse Erotica from 2006. The manually wound timepiece is housed in an 18-karat rose gold case with a polychrome enamel dial, but it’s the reverse side of this gentleman’s watch that spices things up. Leaving nothing to imagination, it cheekily captures an illicit act happening behind curtains—a voyeuristic little secret between the wearer and the watchmaker.

Perrelet too has expanded its Turbine Erotic collection with two limited edition designs that were launched ahead of the December 2022 holiday season. The hentai art painted on the watch face is concealed by a turbine-like oscillating rotor on the face of the dial. This makes sure that the risqué scenes become more visible as the turbine’s blades spin. The watch is powered by COSC-certified P-331-MH movement and comes in a box that vividly depicts the hentai scene, making sure that the erotica is celebrated loudly, clearly and lustily.

Whether or not the images have caused a stir—in society or in the loins—among watch enthusiasts, these watches have time and again been coveted by collectors for their lasting appeal, and have continued to increase in value. The verdict is in: you can hate them or love them, but you can’t ignore them. Bottoms up to that.
