The modern icon gets refreshed and now looks even more refined
Always been a big fan of Cartier’s Tank but want to own a version of it that’s a little different from the classic model? The Tank Américaine, a bolder, elongated take on the iconic timepiece may just be the one you’re looking for.
So named by the brand because its design is linked to American culture and encapsulates its values of freedom and style, this Tank variant expresses the idea behind it aptly with its broadened proportions.
Like all other models in the Tank family, its design, of course, stems from the original Tank created by Louis Cartier in 1917. But it’s the Tank Cintrée, released in 1921, that served as a more direct source of inspiration for the Tank Américaine that was first launched in 1988—evident from the similarity in both their shapes. In comparison with its predecessor, the Tank Américaine has a more compact shape and more rounded brancards (the vertical sides of the case).

This year, Cartier has unveiled an updated line of Tank Américaine models, retaining much of the aesthetics of the previous design while introducing subtle refinements in terms of its finishing and curves.
These small enhancements are not immediately noticeable, unless you compare the older and new versions side by side. The overall result, however, is an even more elegant Tank Américaine—it is now more compact and curvier, even though the differences are minimal.

The new collection is available in three sizes—large (44.4 x 24.4mm), small (35.4 x 19.4mm) and a mini (28 x 15.2mm) model—and in steel, rose gold and diamond-set variants (for the small and mini sizes).
Except for the large model, which is fitted with the new 1899 MC calibre (a self-winding mechanical movement made for slimmer cases), the rest of the models are powered by quartz movements.
