What drives and motivates you?

At a very young age, my father instilled the values of humanity and nature living in balance. Even as a young kid, I saw that it was only humanity tipping the scale and I felt so hopeless in making any change as an individual.

I’ve always wanted to do something that challenged the status quo that did good for people and planet. In the various careers I’ve held, I couldn’t seem to get enough traction with making change as it never passed the commercial lens competing with globalised practices.

In 2012 I fell into farming as a guy that just wanted a good salad in Singapore. Because of the time it takes for European varieties to get here, the imported produce lose their taste and quality, and we still pay a premium because of all the logistics. I saw an opportunity to leverage technology and change the way we produce fresh vegetables in highly dense cities like Singapore and Hong Kong, so I put my head down and got to work on bringing that vision to fruition.

A lot has changed since I started the journey of Sustenir in a basement. Back then global warming was considered propaganda and often even dismissed by governments. Today, the mountains of trash piling up in our waterways and the effects of global warming cannot be ignored.

My motivation for change was initially somewhat selfish to say ‘I did something important in my lifetime’. That all changed when my first son was born four years ago. Now, I fight for change for him and the next generation so they may have the chance to experience nature as I did as a child.

How do you manage your time every day?

My Outlook Calendar is teeming with meetings from those I must attend, to meetings that my team are running—that are optional for when I’m free. There are two times in the day that I simply don’t compromise on and that’s first thing in the morning for when I go to the gym, and the bath and bed times of my boys in the evening.

I’m consistent with these times in my daily schedule because I believe that you can’t fill anyone’s cup when yours is empty, so look after yourself and listen to your body’s physical and mental state with diet and exercise. And most importantly, you should never compromise on family time.

What do you look for in a watch?

Just like my design philosophy, less is more and simple is smart.

What is your career trajectory?

Prior to founding BECO, I was the Co-Founder and CEO of Sustenir Group (Sustenir), a high-tech controlled environment agricultural (CEA) farming business that was created to help communities grow products locally—displacing imports to reduce food waste and carbon logistics from the traditional value chain. The purpose of this business was to help communities across Asia bring production closer to the demand and help land scarce countries like Singapore, and Hong Kong, leverage their commercial buildings to grow produce.

After successfully founding Sustenir and scaling the infrastructure across Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, I saw an opportunity to truly disrupt the food value chain by focusing my skills on the nascent part of the supply chain—specifically, outdoor farms. With Sustenir’s farming system growing product that can’t grow locally and BECO increasing productivity on the traditional outdoor farming footprints (greater output, higher quality and reduced resources), I believe that this is a necessary solution for communities around the world to move towards a more resilient food future.

When did your appreciation for Montblanc first begin?

When I was first introduced to Montblanc, it was over a property deal in my early 20s where the developer I signed the contract with used her gold Montblanc Meisterstück pen. I was then later told by a colleague, “That’s how you can tell if someone’s really successful—that pen”.

Many years later I started buying items from Montblanc and learnt that the brand goes beyond a status symbol. For me, it’s about the engineering and quality of the products they create.  I have a passport holder that is more than 15 years old and with hundreds of trips to over 20 countries, and it still looks brand new.

In a throw-away society where single use products drive the greatest profit margins, I aspire towards brands that build things to last.

What is your relationship with Montblanc?

When my wife and I were planning for the birth of my first son, being the long term planner that I am, I was starting to think about him becoming a man and how we would celebrate that. My wife was doing such an incredible job planning everything else, so I felt that this was something I could lean in on.

I’d heard of various coming of age, milestone gifts, but there was one gift a friend of mine received; which was a bottle of Penfolds Grange from his birth year. Thing is, his parents brought it when he was still a baby and had kept it in their cellar all those years with the intention of enjoying it together with him when he legally becomes an adult. I always remember him talking about how excited he was to have his first drink with his parents.

As I started looking for a nice bottle of wine, I got to thinking about having a gift that my son could grow up with—one that would also last his life as an adult. It was when my wife asked me to help organise the birth certificate and passport that I started to think about the importance of the signature on documents, and the importance of a signature in genera—especially when you legally become an adult.

Signatures go beyond the representation of a person's true identity, it often symbolises your commitment to a contract. To me, there is nothing more important than honouring your word, and that is something I wanted to symbolise for my son to carry into his adulthood. So I brought my son a Montblanc pen from the Starwalker collection because of their modern, unique and dynamic style. It is the pen I used to sign his birth certificate with, and every important deal I would do leading up to his eighteenth birthday. I would then gift it to him when he becomes legally an adult. It’s a tool that he could use to help him navigate through his life as he chooses to commit to contracts, and honour his word.

We were blessed with another boy again in 2020, and they both have Montblanc Starwalker pens from their birth year. I now oscillate between pens when I sign important contracts. My only hope is to instil in them the importance of honouring your word, the power of a good contract and how a pen can be the start to great things.
