Audemars Piguet’s Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique tells time in what can only be described as a ‘philosophical’ manner

Haute Horlogerie is about so much more than simply telling the time. If basic indication of time was the only reason to have a watch, everybody’s wrists would be adorned with ultra-precise yet entirely uninspiring quartz movements. However, for those who appreciate the romance of watchmaking and value elegance over precision, including stylish businesswoman Anouk Yve (@anoukyve), Audemars Piguet’s Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique is an antidote for the insatiable demands and strict deadlines imposed on modern life.

Inspired by the aesthetics of 17th-century single-hand timepieces, the Philosophique encourages women to re-appropriate time, telling the time in a somewhat ‘philosophical’ manner. The fact that the watch is single handed, and the face has only one simple hour marker, means that exact time is more a concept than a reality, with the wearer able to estimate to the nearest five or 10 minutes–but who cares if you’re a few minutes out, right?

Of course, being Audemars Piguet, the devil is in the detail and the timepiece is, in fact, much more intricate than it seems at first sight. As the single hand glides around the dial, the true beauty and craft of the watch is revealed.

Instead of being fixed centrally on the hand-crafted dimpled dial, which comes in subtle brown or blue shades, the polished and sand-blasted hand is attached to a central rotating disc which, as the hand completes its normal clockwise motion, rotates in an anticlockwise direction, creating a curious yet enticing visual effect. Thanks to this visually simple yet mechanically complex patented mechanism, the hand traces an elliptical trajectory around the dial, matching the elliptical shape of the case.

And what a case it is… Measuring 39.5mm in diameter and with a height of 10.9mm, the case is available in 18-karat white or pink gold and is adorned with alternating satin brushing and Frosted Gold finishing. This stunning ‘diamond dust’ effect is in sharp contrast with the hand-polished bevels adorning the case and lugs.

As Chairwoman of Audemars Piguet’s Board of Directors, Jasmine Audemars, explains, this is a timepiece that is so much more than a simple time-telling device. “At Audemars Piguet, we have always charted our own course, following our firm convictions and starting our independent trends, even during times of crisis,” she says. “We continue today with our new Millenary Philosophique. This watch takes a break from the rushing minutes of our world and invites you to set your own tempo.”
