Created to reflect the beauty of nature, the Diamond Breeze collection by Van Cleef & Arpels turns to the sacred lotus for inspiration this winter

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us. As Christmas music fills the air and lights twinkle merrily, it’s no surprise that we’re getting into the Christmas spirit—and though we may not see much snowfall in our little corner of the world, that doesn’t mean we can't still enjoy a white Christmas.

For those dreaming of a winter wonderland, a different—and dare we say, far better—kind of ice can be found in the Diamond Breeze collection by Van Cleef & Arpels. Resembling delicate blooms dusted by the first snow, this classic collection by the French maison makes its annual return each winter. This year, it takes inspiration from the enchanting lotus, long considered sacred in many Asian cultures.

Following its debut appearance in a 1920s Van Cleef & Arpels collection, the lotus has long served as an enduring source of inspiration for the house. In this year’s Lotus collection, which comprises a Between the Finger ring, a pendant and a pair of earrings, this floral symbol of purity is given a fresh reinterpretation.

Set in striking asymmetrical bouquets of three or four, each masterpiece is composed of bejewelled petals depicting the infinitesimal motion of a flower in the breeze. Delicately sloping upward, the petals seems to quiver, sublimating the silhouette with their dazzling grace.

Beyond their beauty, these creations also illustrate the ingenuity that has cemented Van Cleef & Arpels’ place in the world of jewellery-making. For instance, the Between the Finger ring, first redesigned in 2017, contains a motif that can expand over one or several fingers thanks to an ingenious system, allowing its wearer greater versatility.

Meanwhile, the openwork technique of the Lotus earrings and necklace allow light to shine through their delicate structures, amplifying the brilliance of each precious gem.

Finally, to make this year’s Lotus collection truly special, Van Cleef & Arpels collaborated with a host of talented artists, designers and interior architects, who were given carte blanche to reinterpret the shapes and colours of winter.

In a manner befitting the storied maison, featured artist Fideli Sundqvist created a poetic universe using intricate paper art, depicting a rabbit hopping through the freshly fallen snow—delivering a message of good luck and good fortune for the festive season.
