To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, we're listing our favourite sustainable jewellery brands and collections for you to add to your ethical jewellery collection
Looking for jewellery that won’t hurt the environment? From bracelets that give back to the environment, to fully sustainable jewellery that uses responsibly sourced and ethical materials, here are the best sustainable jewellery collections to shop from on Earth Day 2021.
1. John Hardy Bamboo Collection
Artisan jeweller John Hardy has released a new bamboo collection for Spring 2021. Pieces are crafted by hand in the brand’s Bali workshop by master artisans.
For each handcrafted bamboo piece sold, bamboo seedlings are planted in Indonesia as part of their initiative to reforest Bali. The pictured Bamboo Cuff in sterling silver imitates the bamboo’s flexibility and weightless strength in its voluminous silhouette.
2. Jessie Thomas
British goldsmith and jewellery designer, Jessie Thomas’ brand transcends trends, focusing on subtlety and wearability in her designs. Using one hundred per cent recycled gold and responsibly sourced precious gemstones and diamonds, all jewellery materials are ethically sourced and sustainable.
3. Shahla Karimi
Handmade in the Big Apple, Shahla Karimi jewellery uses recycled gold and conflict-free gemstones in their pieces. The two-man team includes founder Shahla Karimi, who designs and handles day-to-day operations, as well as Emma Scaramozzino, the senior product manager of the brand.
Inspired by stories and memories of the past, the brand taps into the feeling of nostalgia to produce its jewellery pieces. Designs are mostly minimalistic and elegant, perfect for everyday wear.
4. Venyx Mother Earth Collection
Venyx’s Mother Earth collection showcases Earth-themed necklaces, pendants and earrings using Azurmalachite as its central gemstone for the collection to mimic the Earth’s blue-green tones. Ten per cent of proceeds from the Mother Earth collection will also be donated to SeaLegacy, a non-profit organisation that aims to create healthy and abundant oceans through media and art.
5. Temple St Clair
New York jewellery brand, Temple St Clair sells everything from trendy everyday pieces to flashier, bejewelled rings and necklaces as well as unique, one-of-a-kind high jewellery. A member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, the brand strives to keep its materials sustainable.
Using materials such as recycled gold, Fairtrade gold and conflict-free diamonds, you can find the company’s annual report on their website which details its sustainability goals and mission.
6. Deborah Pagani
Whether you need hair accessories or fine jewellery, Deborah Pagani’s got your back. The designer started her career styling hair in the late 90s but later fell into the jewellery business when her friends began to admire the pieces she made for herself.
Now, her brand combines her two passions together, selling a range of hair accessories made with metal accents that can double as cuffs and clips. Her fine jewellery line is just as sleek, featuring modern designs with responsibly sourced gems. Her more recently expanded bespoke services help clients upcycle gold and gems from heirloom jewellery to create brand new jewellery pieces that clients can fall in love with.
