From the deserts of Africa to the highlands of Kashmir, Alexandre Reza journeyed far and wide, building a trove of treasures shaped by pride, heritage and a steadfast dedication to natural beauty.

In the storied Place Vendôme, where the glow of the world’s most revered jewellery maisons converges, there lies a discreet but formidable name: Reza. More than a house of high jewellery, it is a way of life crafted from an abiding passion for the planet’s rarest gems. Founded by Alexandre Reza (1922–2016), an artist and adventurer, the maison grew from one man’s quest to uncover untouched beauty in the farthest corners of the earth. Long before his own name appeared above a doorway, he stood quietly behind the sparkle of other great names, building an empire that placed gemstones at the very heart of luxury.

Master craftsman of unique gemstones

In the world of precious stones, Alexandre Reza is often likened to Marco Polo, a restless traveller in pursuit of purity and wonder. For more than thirty years before opening his salon at Place Vendôme in the early 1950s, he was a trusted supplier of exceptional gems to legendary houses like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Harry Winston. His path took him through Colombia, Burma and Sri Lanka, to quarries steeped in history, where nature had spent millennia creating marvels of colour and clarity.

When he founded Reza in Place Vendôme in the early 1950s, he brought with him a depth of experience and an artist’s devotion to craft. His designs, whether ornate or understated, blended 18th-century classicism with a refined sensibility. Each creation, the result of a meticulous process that might span over a year, sought to amplify the light, hue and inner life of the stone itself. There was no rush. His work paid tribute to the gem, not the hand that set it. The boutique, decorated in an opulent Rococo style, became a sanctuary for royalty and connoisseurs drawn to pieces that carried a sense of time and permanence.

The successor from Wall Street

In late 2008, with Alexandre’s health in decline, the responsibility of legacy passed to his son Olivier Reza. Leaving behind a career at Lazard and experience on the Board of Directors at Sotheby’s, the former Wall Street banker returned to the family fold armed with degrees in law and finance and a deep-rooted love for the world his father had built.

From the beginning, Olivier saw Reza not as a brand, but as a vault of wonders to be guarded and guided. He understood that its rarefied aesthetic demanded a different kind of stewardship that leaned into creative intuition rather than traditional retail playbooks. With sharp instinct and an eye on the horizon, he set about ensuring the maison would remain relevant in a rapidly shifting world.

Repositioning a legacy

In 2020, Olivier made a daring move: relocating Reza’s headquarters to Madison Avenue, New York. The new atelier opened its doors with a minimalist sensibility, where exquisite jewellery now sits in conversation with contemporary interiors by the Haas Brothers, L’Objet, and artworks from Olivier’s own collection. It is a space designed to foster dialogue between eras, disciplines and ideas. A modern expression of Reza’s enduring values, rooted in legacy but always reaching forward.

At the core of Reza lies a devotion to unique gemstones, safeguarded and celebrated for over half a century. Though the brand holds one of the world’s most significant collections of natural, untreated coloured stones, Olivier Reza continues to seek out and curate exceptional gems with care. Bespoke services have also come into sharper focus, transforming each piece into a deeply personal expression shaped through meaningful collaboration between client and craftsman. Speaking with Sotheby’s, Olivier shared his vision: “I want Reza’s creations to be true to the past but still aim for the present and new…”

Entering the digital age

Under Olivier’s direction, Reza’s creations blend heritage with a sense of modernity. Collections like “A”, distinguished by an open clasp that allows the gem to be seen in its full splendour; ribbon-like designs beloved by style icon Rihanna; or the celestial curves of the Moon/Crescent line, each reflects an evolving aesthetic language. Even stones from Alexandre Reza’s archive are being reimagined, recut to enhance brilliance and renew their magic. For Olivier, every jewel is the result of extraordinary craftsmanship, shaped by experienced hands that refine the raw into radiance while quietly telling the story of a maison and its time-honoured techniques.
