From ‘Titanic’ to ‘Moulin Rouge!’, rediscover the coveted jewellery pieces that appeared in iconic films

Humans are somehow similar to magpies. Shiny, expensive things often attract our attention: tokens, trinkets, jewellery, and all the glitz. And this does not only happen in real life, too—it is mostly during our state of comfort that we relish the finer things in life. And one of the things we do in our rest is watching films and shows alike.

Several high-budgeted movies have showcased a grand production, from wardrobe to accessories. But only a few managed to leave a lasting impression through several generations. It will be long before anyone would forget the famous Heart of the Ocean, for example, or the pearl necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in one of her films.

From Titanic to Moulin Rouge!, we list the movies that immortalised some of the finest pieces of jewellery known in pop culture.

In Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts’ character Vivienne wore various elegant dresses and jewels. But one stood out the most: a white gold necklace glittered with diamonds and 23 rubies made by the French goldsmith Fred Joaillier.

Before the film hit the theatres, the estimated price of the necklace was around US$ 250 thousand. With the movie’s success, the necklace’s value increased—now worth about US$ 1.35 million.

The pearl necklace and the Ribbon Rosette from ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (1961)

Arguably, the most famous jewellery to grace the big screen belongs to Audrey Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. There are two notable pieces from the film—the pearl necklace and the Ribbon Rosette.

Jean Schlumberger, one of the most appreciated designers of the 20th century, forged the Ribbon Rosette. It is made of platinum, yellow gold and diamonds, and one of the largest yellow diamonds in the world in its centre. The gemstone was discovered in the Kimberly Mine in South Africa in 1877. Hepburn wore it during the promotions for the film.

The pearl necklace during the opening scene of the film is equally legendary. Around 100 to 200 beads were used to create it and were arranged in four rows. In the centre, a large brooch with diamonds sits in place.

One of the best scenes in cinema is the heist scene from Ocean’s 8. Their target? The Cartier Toussaint necklace included several pink and white diamonds, a 12-carat olive green diamond, and a 136.25-carat blue-white diamond.

The jewel in the film was only a replica. The original piece was created by Jacques Cartier in 1931 for the Maharaja of Nawanagar and dubbed “the most beautiful cascade of coloured diamonds in the world”.

In Titanic, Rose (played by Kate Winslet) sported a rare blue gemstone on her neck. The famed Heart of the Ocean was a replica of the Diamond of Hope, a historically famous 45.52-carat diamond.

The actress was wearing zircons made by London jewellers Asprey and Garrard.

After the film’s success, the Heart of the Ocean has been replicated several times. Celine Dion wore one of its most famous versions at the 1998 Oscars—a 170-carat sapphire necklace set with 65 round diamonds.

The soundtrack isn’t the only memorable thing to come out of Moulin Rouge! In this Baz Luhrmann film, Satine (played by Nicole Kidman) received a necklace of 1,308 diamonds set in platinum, with a 2.5-carat sapphire as a clasp from the Duke of Monroth. Australian jeweller Stefano Canturi designed the necklace.

Another Baz Luhrmann film joins the list, now in the form of The Great Gatsby

The film partnered with Tiffany & Co to produce some of the finest pieces: a daisy seal ring that Gatsby (played by Leonardo Dicaprio) wore, Daisy’s (played by Carey Mulligan) pearl necklace and her tiara during the famed party scene. These were recreated using high-quality diamonds and pearls, reflecting the heroine’s wealth and social status.
