Handcrafted in its very own workshop in Hong Kong, Dilys' Collection's jewellery tells a story that surpasses generations

Dilys’ Collection has a history that's earned the maison a reputation as a local treasure. The jeweller boasts close to 30 years of expertise and draws much of its inspiration from the bustling city of which it was born: Hong Kong.

Dilys Young established her namesake brand in 1991 after spending more than a decade working as a jewellery designer. The maison continues to operate from its very first boutique–called Room 702–in the iconic New World Tower on Queen’s Road Central. Staying true to its roots, Young has established an in-house workshop to ensure her pieces–many of which are unique–are handcrafted with the utmost quality from start-to-finish in her hometown.

Young's youngest daughter, Pearl Li, trained under her mother after showing an interest in the family business. Today, she is a London College of Fashion graduate and heads up Dilys’ Collection’s marketing department as her mother's successor. “My first encounter with jewellery was when I was just three years old, while attending one of my mum’s private jewellery shows,” she says. “She tells me that I would pick pieces up, inspect them, and rearrange them.”

A self-professed introvert, Li would attend her mother’s exhibitions and private shows, quietly absorbing and learning from the glitz and glamour associated with belonging to a family of jewellers. “I always felt lucky," she explains, "being granted a front-row seat to the conversations between my mum and her clients, who were also very strong and intelligent women.”

Li was always set to follow in her mother’s footsteps. “Growing up it [Dilys’ Collection] was all my parents talked about.” But instead of design, Li excels in the business side of things. “I want to open the brand up,” she explains. “Dilys' fine jewellery already has a distinct identity under the creative direction of my mum and her unique sense of style.” Li hopes to further this, “by establishing our brand and extending my mum’s legacy, which requires confidence and vision.”

For Li, her passion comes from each client’s satisfaction. “I want people to experience the beauty and charisma of our pieces in our private showroom setting.” The maison’s clientele has skyrocketed over the years, with collectors regularly purchasing pieces through private shows in Asia–Taipei, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore–America, England and Dubai.

“Here at Dilys', we're about bringing the spirit of bespoke into collectable, yet extremely wearable, fine jewellery pieces.” Li is particularly interested in heritage jewellery. “We like to promote the redesign of old jewellery that’s passed down from previous generations to help retain its meaning and value."

That’s not to say Dilys’ Collection hasn’t established its own unique style, which is particularly recognisable in its contemporary sub-brand, Young By Dilys'. The Celestial Eye, OM and Lucky Coin lines from Young By Dilys' do particularly well, says Li, and utilise natural gemstones that evoke the family’s moral values.

“Each collection has a strong personality. The Novel collection by Dilys', for example, is strongly inspired by architecture and our city’s east-meets-west aesthetic. The Vintage collection is influenced by art and different cultures, such as the Art Deco movement and the Qing Dynasty.”

With so much on offer, there’s something for everyone, but for Li, the wearer of Dilys’ Collection has a certain set of traits. “She is confident and intelligent. She’s aware of her own style, but not afraid to experiment.” And with Hong Kong deeply embedded into the maison's DNA, what more could we ask for?
