Cover Jewellery designer Cindy Chao

This month, Taiwanese jewellery designer Cindy Chao will be participating at Masterpiece London, the world’s leading cross-collecting show, set within the grounds of the historic Royal Hospital Chelsea. Cindy—whose sculpturally amazing pieces under the label Cindy Chao The Art Jewel have fetched astronomical prices on auction—is the first Asian jeweller to be invited to the show, and she’ll share the spotlight with a carefully curated list of exhibitors that offer art, design, furniture and jewellery, from antiquity to present day. So what can visitors to Masterpiece London look forward to? Read on to find out.

1. A first look at the Black Label Masterpiece collection

Cindy Chao’s one-of-a-kind Black Label Masterpiece collection for 2018 will be unveiled at Masterpiece London, providing visitors a rare chance to experience the museum-calibre art jewel in person. “Inspired by one of my trips to Canada last year, where I was fully immersed in nature’s endless wonder, the new collection will allow collectors and connoisseurs to experience the world in and through my eyes,” says Cindy.

The ultimate expression of her savoir-faire as a sculptor and artist, The Black Label Masterpieces are the most exclusive of the designer’s creations. Each is named, numbered and dated. Original, innovative and technically challenging, each one requires more than 10,000 hours to complete.

2. Witness exquisite craftsmanship up close

Inspired by architecture, sculpture, travel and nature, Cindy Chao’s team of jewellery artists sculpt all of her jewellery by hand, producing organic forms that are as vibrant as real life. Her philosophy is to create high jewellery as pieces of art, and through this, to redefine the perception of high jewellery.

Cindy Chao’s jewelled sculptures reflect light and colour from every angle, with no surface left untouched by gems. Each work of art is created using the delicate craft of 18th century artisan wax moulding, which requires decades of jewellery expertise.

3. Appreciate the iconic pieces on display

In 2016, Queen Elizabeth II marked her 90th birthday with a commemorative publication that showcases her life and reign, including the various organisations that have received accolades and honours, including the Queen’s Awards.

Cindy Chao The Art Jewel was one of the organisations selected to appear in the publication. In line with this, Cindy is bringing her iconic Majestic Beauty Fan, which she designed in collaboration with Forevermark as a tribute to the monarch. The gorgeous piece comes in 18K white gold set with 2,399 diamonds weighing 310.27 carats, and includes a detachable butterfly brooch.

4. An opportunity to hobnob with royalty

High profile attendees—including Princess Alexandra, Sarah, the Duchess of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York—attend the show every year. There’s also a chance you might bump into actor Eddie Redmayne, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber or sculptor Anish Kapoor. VIP guests have access to various events, including the show’s opening cocktail, exclusive dinners, masterclasses, and book signings.

5. Appreciate masterpieces from around the world

Since its founding, Cindy Chao The Art Jewel has been known for its artistic interpretations, and this showing is no exception. “The fair’s renowned range of disciplines and its integral role in the global art market make it an extraordinary backdrop to debut my latest designs,” says Cindy.

Masterpiece London offers the opportunity for new and established collectors to appreciate not only Cindy’s pieces, but other exceptional works of art that have been thoroughly scrutinised by an experienced vetting team who ensure that the items are worthy of the title "masterpiece".

Masterpiece London runs from June 28 to July 4, 2018. Find out more at
