How the designer-turned-restaurateur behind OpenHouse KLCC and Acme Bar and Coffee uses jewellery to set the tone for both everyday style and runway-ready ensembles

"Wearing jewellery really is as old as the first caveman discovering fire," muses Andrew Wong, whose daring and eclectic fashion sense earned him a spot with seven other gents in Tatler Asia's most stylish people in 2021. "Jewellery is an adornment that represents status, or tells a story about you."

In Wong's case, jewellery and accessories are merely an extension of his personality and tastes, adding character to an everyday outfit or edgy glam for a special night out. His ultimate style rule when it comes to jewellery? Trust your gut and wear what makes you feel good. Read on to learn how Wong's jewellery choices vary based on different looks in his style repertoire.

What's your ideal look when choosing jewellery for yourself?

For daily wear, I’m quite minimal in what I wear to work: a thin leather bracelet paired with a braided rope bracelet. But I’m never without my crystal pendant. It’s my talisman.

Tell us your absolute favourite jewellery for special occasions.

It depends on what I wear, and for what occasion. If it’s a fashionable social event, I usually wear my heavy metals—the big pieces of necklaces from Rick Owens paired with my favourite bracelets from Parts of Four, a Parisian brand that made early jewellery for Rick Owens. Its jewellery have a brutalist, chunky architectural feel and I love how they are washed with acid to create unusual colour and texture.

Is there a backstory to these pieces that makes them extra special?

I have a friend who works for Parts of 4. They are all handmade and each is slightly different in terms of the metal work or wash. There’s a pair of bracelets made from raw leather and buffalo bone, and I can feel the raw primal energy emanating from them. I also have a pair of metal cuffs that I nickname my “Wonder Woman” set. Instead of gold, it is a raw metal colour and goes with anything.

Is there an everyday fashion accessory you can't leave the house without?

My raw unpolished crystal quartz necklace pendant from Parts of Four. It sounds very hocus pocus but crystals do have energy and that’s why watches have a crystal heart keeping time. I find it has a beat that keep me in sync with what goes on around me.

What's an important thing to remember when it comes to dressing up with jewellery?

Wear what makes you feel good. Wearing jewellery can elevate a look, but don’t let it wear you down. For me, what I wear daily and what I wear to an event are quite different. I do like wearing dark sunglasses to some events if I’m drinking a fair bit. My eyes turn very red so it’s a great way of hiding them!
