Another observation by Google fans was that unlike its usual strategy of offering comparable flagship specs to other top Android devices, Google has opted for a Snapdragon 765G processor in its latest flagship, foregoing the higher-tier Snapdragon 865 or 865 Plus processors. The Snapdragon 765G is paired with Qualcomm’s integrated X52 modem which supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G.

Of course, cameras are an important feature of any smartphone, and the Pixel 5 boasts a new 16-megapixel ultra-wide sensor at its rear, in addition to its primary 12.2-megapixel wide-angle camera and an 8-megapixel punch-hole front camera. The new ultra-wide camera offers a 107-degree field of view.

Known for its software photography enhancements, Google brings its Night Sight to portrait mode shots for better photos in low light, and has added a new Portrait Light mode to adjust how the light hits your face, even before the shot. For smoother videography, Google introduces three new stabilisation modes, as well as a Cinematic Pan setting.

The Pixel 5 will also feature 8GB of RAM; 128GB of storage; a 4,080mAh battery that supports 18W charging, 12W wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging; and a waterproof rating of IP68 for protection up to 1.5-metre deep. It is available in two colours, Just Black and Sorta Sage.

As for the Pixel 4a 5G, don’t mistake it for a Pixel 4a with added 5G capabilities. Instead, the new iteration shares more similarities with the Pixel 5, featuring the same rear cameras, software features, and processor.

The less premium model boasts a larger 6.2-inch OLED display and a 3.5mm audio jack—which Pixel 5 does not have—but it is not water-resistant, does not support wireless charging, and has a smaller 3885mAh battery.

If you’re interested in getting either of Google’s new phones, you’ll have to wait. The Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are now available for pre-order only in nine countries—the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia—with the next wave of release expected in November.
