With world-leading aerodynamics, a new-generation battery, and a raft of ground-breaking integrated technology, the new EQS claims to usher in a new dawn of all-electric luxury cars
Mercedes-Benz has been at the forefront of high-end motoring innovation for almost a century now, and the German marque is still setting ambitious targets. The brand aims to have more than half the cars it sells featuring electric drive systems by 2030, and the carmaker’s first all-electric luxury saloon, the new EQS, comes at the opportune moment.
Available as either the EQS 450+ or its sportier Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ sibling, the new model is the first in the Mercedes-EQ family to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles, setting a new standard for electric motoring.
Featuring intuitive technology with futuristic functionality, in conjunction with a design that combines the opulence of a limousine with the otherworldly look of an alien spaceship, the new EQS promises to be a silent game-changer for the sector.
The new models mark the launch of a new generation of batteries that feature significantly higher energy density. The super-sleek design also means the new EQS is, in fact, the most aerodynamic production car in the world, setting a new Cd benchmark of 0.20.
What does this mean in real-world terms? It’s incredibly quiet and can run for a long distance between charges—up to 785km. It’s no slouch either, with an output of up to 761hp (in the EQS 53 4MATIC+ with Dynamic Plus package*), powering it from standstill to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds and up to a notional top speed of 250km/h.
Of course, most EQS buyers are in the market for luxury and the reassuringly spacious cabin does not disappoint in this regard— The liftback design with superior luggage space, and notably, the Energising Air Control Plus climatised rear seats with HEPA filter that enables a very high filtration level of outside air entering the cabin. All the usual bells and whistles are there in abundance—and a lot more besides. In addition to the swathes of plush upholstery, gleaming metals and catalogue of gadgets, the star of the show is the optional (but highly recommended) MBUX Hyperscreen*. This large, curved screen unit sweeps almost from A-pillar to A-pillar, with three screens sitting under a cover glass and appearing to merge into one. If a cabin with a wow factor is what you’re looking for, be sure to tick this box on the options sheet.
