The specially tuned version of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato hits the auction block next month
A specially tuned version of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato classic is hitting the auction block next month: the ultra-rare classic car is thought to realise up to US$11 million at the “Passion of a Lifetime” sale held by Gooding & Company.
The lightweight Zagato example is widely regarded as one of the most “beautiful, iconic, desirable” sports cares of its era, according to a statement on the auction listing, and while just 19 examples were ever built, the aesthetic and racing achievements of the DB4 GT Zagato still managed to leave a powerful and enduring legacy within the automotive community.
The specific example in the sale was the only model ever to be finished in Peony, an elegant dark red colourway. The first owner of the Aston Martin, Teddy Beck of Cheshire, England, drove the vehicle for just 15,000 miles despite being in possession of the car for over two decades. Since then, the car has had just four other owners since 1979, including the Aston Martin director Victor Gauntlett and well-known collector Paul Vestey. Still, the current owner has had the car since 1985 yet has only driven it for 30,000 miles.
The vehicle has also won awards as the “world’s leading concours d’elegance” and has been the subject of a handful of books on the British carmaker and the specific model due to its fundamentally original condition, having never required a full restoration. The rare vehicle has an impressive and unparalleled history, retaining its matching numbers engine, as documented by factory build records.
“With its irreplaceable, soulful character, unique appearance, and superb provenance, 0176/R is one of the very best, most original examples of this rare and sought-after breed,” Gooding & Company said in a statement on its website
