Mercedes-Benz E-Class 

Also a "Top Safety Pick+", the rival of the 5 Series also gets high honours for being a such a safe car in the large luxury car segment, passing with flying colours.

One area the E-Class has an advantage over the BMW in IIHS' safety report is the ease of use for child seat anchors.

Subaru WRX

One of the world's most well known rally cars also doubles as a "Top Safety Pick+" small car by the IIHS, making improvements in safety features over previous models to push it to the top of the safety awards.

As expected, the car received a "good" rating in every rating under crashworthiness, crash avoidance and mitigation, with the only thing tarnishing its perfect score being the "acceptable" rating for its child seat anchors.

Toyota Camry

One of the most recognisable sedans in the Toyota lineup gets a perfect score for every crashworthiness, crash avoidance and mitigation in the midsize car segment, resulting in a "Top Safety Pick+" by the IIHS.

There's even a hybrid version, with the option to have a host of safety features in luxury variants such as a blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alerts and additional airbags.

Mercedes-Benz GLC

The only car in the midsize luxury SUV segment to receive a "Top Safety Pick+" by the IIHS, this handsome ride got a great score across the board.

While it received a prefect "good" score in crashworthiness, it did not receive full marks for its front crash prevention rating and its child seat anchors.

Lexus NX

Recently refreshed and making its debut last month, the NX gets the "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS in the midsize luxury SUV segment.

While the "Top Safety Pick" category is a small step down from "Top Safety Pick+", these cars are still incredibly safe in their own right.

The car received flying colours in every segment tested by the agency, but its null rating for the passenger-side when it came to crashworthiness prevented it from getting a "+" recommendation.

Lexus RX

The bigger brother to the NX, the RX has the ability to seat 7 individuals and receives the same "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS.

The RX also shares the same ratings in crashworthiness with the NX, in that the passenger-side rating is null. The car comes in six versions, with a hyrbid model to boot.

Volvo XC60

Moving on to the safety ratings given by the European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) for 2017 models, the Volvo XC60 takes home the number one ranking when it comes to safety, getting a full 5 out of 5 stars rating.

The large off-roader gets a whopping safety rating of 98% for adult occupants, 87% for children, 76% for pedestrians and an admirable 95% when it comes to on board safety assist functions.

Incredibly safe without sacrificing luxury, this car is the one of the safest cars on the market.

Volvo S90

Number four on Euro NCAP's list with a full five stars, the latest S90 is a hybrid that looks sleek and luxurious, thanks to Scandinavian aesthetics.

This four door saloon gets a full five stars and is awarded a safety rating of 95% for adult occupants, 80% for childrens, 76% for pedestrian and 93% for safety assists.

Volkswagen Polo

Number five on Euro NCAP's latest 2017 rating, the small hatchback also nailed the highest 5 star rating possible.

The Polo scored a safety rating of 96%, 85%, 76% and 59% for adults, children, pedestrian and safety assistance features respectively.

Toyota CH-R

If you thought the new Toyota CH-R looked great but was hesistant to get it as your new family car, you'll be glad to know that it received a high safety rating (full 5 stars) from Euro NCAP as the number 9 safest car on their latest list.

The car receives a 95% rating for adult occupants, 77% for children, 76% for pedestrians and 78% for safety assist.

The car comes with a blind spot monitor, a rear cross traffic alert and other welcoming safety features.

Porsche Cayenne

Coming in at Number 13 with a five star rating, the Cayenne is a big car that will offer up to 5 passengers lavish comfort with great protection, all without sacrificing sportiness.

The Porsche Cayenne gets a 95% rating for adult passengers, 80% for child occupants, 73% for pedestrians and a 62% for safety assistant features.

Audi Q5

Coming in at number 16 on Euro NCAP's ranking with a full five star rating, the Q5 is a solid and study SUV with a smooth performance. It also has a hybrid option that comes with Quattro, Audi's great 4x4 system for an even safer ride.

The Q5 clocks in at 93%, 86%, 73% and 58% for adult occupants, child occupants, pedestrians and safety assist functionalities respectively.

Range Rover Velar

Number 19 on Euro NCAP's list, the Velar has a heads-up display so you don't have to take your eyes off the road, superior off-road capabilities and is built to resist harsh elements.

The car gains a respectful 93% safety rating for adult passengers, 85% for children, 74% for pedestrians and 72% for its safety assist features.

The smallest SUV from Jaguar, the E-Pace is another solid safety choice. Even at number 24, the Jaguar does remarkbly well in Euro NCAP's four ratings for safety.

The E-Pace clocks in an 86% rating for adult occupants, 87% for child passengers, 77% for pedestrians and 72% for the car's safety assistants.
