The cover star of Tatler Malaysia’s February 2021 issue reveals some fascinating trivia about herself and her family

When this video was taken at Melinda Looi’s showroom and boutique in Bangsar, Chinese New Year was just around the corner. And even though it was going to be a much quieter celebration this year, with only up to 15 people allowed for the reunion dinner, it didn’t dampen our excitement to usher in the coming Year of the Ox. Ever the lovely hostess with the mostest, Looi and her husband Dirk Luebbert prepared some delicious bites and invited us to partake in the symbolic ‘lou hei’ prosperity toss with yee sang from W Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

During our talk, Looi was warm and funny as she spoke about being on our cover for the first time, which also featured her mum and two daughters, and divulged why her children’s names all start with the letter 'M'. She also talked about why she has such crazy hair, her passion for costume designing—take a look at the Queen Elizabeth costume she made for a local theatrical performance—and ended the session with a rapid-fire Q&A which revealed some interesting little nuggets about the designer.
