Creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli injects novelty into the perception of men's formalwear with Valentino’s fall 2021 collection

Valentino's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli continues to reinvent the aesthetics of the maison while upholding its heritage. This time we see the evolution of men's formalwear in its fall 2021 collection.

Piccioli’s belief is that the nature of men’s wardrobe should be versatile, non-conforming, and totally free of traditional concepts and move towards a more expressive, romanticised concept of the modern gentleman: free, punk, and subversive.

For fall 2021, we will see a prevalence of Valentino’s signature embroidery embellishments, tone-on-tone contrasts, as well as drawing inspiration from the prevailing urban culture that values identity and self-expression.

Valentino's take on romanticism begins with tone-on-tone contrasts of black and white with embroidered flowers as part of the formal suit. These embossed embroideries span across formal to casual apparel, invoking a nuanced but expressive look.

Ever inspired by the beauty to be found in contrast, creations of tone-on-tone floral blooms against solid colours, becoming the modern gentleman's staple. Eye-catching and subversive, the signature Valentino Dark Blooming prints against black or white is a declaration of independence from traditional preppy chic.

What's preppy-chic without a pair of trusty kicks? A key highlight of this collection is the Valentino Garavani One Stud sneakers, which are inspired by urban culture. Clad in nappa leather, the Valentino Garavani One Stud Sneaker collection is true to the philosophy with its use of the iconic and oversized Roman Stud on the shoes, while the moulded heel reinforces the spirit of the maison by featuring motifs reminiscent of the signature Bugnato pattern. Available in both the low- and mid-top styles, the collection also comes in four colourways: white, pastel grey, grey and red. It is currently available in stores.

Colours play a significant role for this collection too. Colourful embroidered flowers are found among its casual pieces, including shirts, shorts, and anoraks. Pair them with formal shirts and pants to create contrast.

Valentino's iconic camouflage print now comes in a new multi-coloured variety found on items such as sweatshirts, windbreakers and the popular nylon backpack.

There is also the seasonal white-on-white take on Valentino's camouflage print as well as the use of striking red logos on pristine-white pieces. Match them with accessories such as the Valentino Garavani Atelier bag and Valentino Garavani Atelier sneakers to add street cred instantly.

With a gentler and more modern approach to the cornerstones of men's formalwear, this collection sees an experimental expressiveness conveyed through the maison’s ever-elegant craftsmanship—and we like it.
