Cover Hats are all the rage in Paris (Photo: Goldie Williams)

Headwear the trendiest accessory this season, and if you want to style it, look no further than the fashionable streets of Paris to see how men there are putting looks together

Although the focus of Fashion Week is on the shows and latest collections, we can’t help but admire the trends coming from the streets. As the Haute Couture shows commence, we reflect on the biggest trend seen on men going to and from the menswear shows in Paris: Hats.

From simple to statement, it seems that hats of all shapes and sizes were adopted by the stylish show-goers. Although the clear motive is to stay warm in the January cold, it’s clear that there’s been a more creative approach to styling hats, and we break this trend down into the different types seen, and how to wear them:

1. Beanies

Beanies are a winter staple, and go with just about anything, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with the fabrics and colours.

Shades of orange and yellow were particularly popular, and worn with other autumnal colours to create a tonal look. Fuzzy textures, checkerboard prints and even funky ear details were also seen, demonstrating how versatile this hat really is.

Opt for a shorter beanie if you have longer hair, and go wild with height if prefer a streetwear look. This also works well if you have a beard, as it will balance your features.

2. Bucket hats

Another hat choice that’s been going strong for a few years now is the bucket hat, but now they’re larger and shield the eyes to give the wearer a mysterious look.

Dark colours are always a good choice for winter, but a simple logo never hurts, and neither does a pop of pink to complement and contrast your outfit. We particularly like this combination of pink and camouflage–it feels very early aughts.

3. Berets

Are you really in Paris if you’re not wearing (or seeing) a beret? The country’s iconic head accessory did not go amiss outside shows, and there is more than one style. Rapper Pharrell Williams wore a classic black variety, and with the “1970” lettering, small glasses and khaki green, we’re getting “Black revolution” from this styling.

Piggy-backing off that era, a brown beret worn with with aviator glasses and a white turtleneck also screams ’70s, albeit more European. Finally, a slouchy beret is a great way to soften a masculine look give off university boy vibes.

4. Balaclavas

Balaclavas aren’t reserved for the runway anymore–these toasty face warmers are making their way into the wardrobes of the public, and we’re loving it. They work as a face mask, a statement piece, and even as a way to go incognito.

Style it à la Vetements by wearing one the same colour as your top, or go for a patterned variety in neutral colours like Dolce & Gabbana. Alternatively, mix multiple hat trends, and wear a balaclava over another hat for a unique twist.

5. Caps

Caps will never die, and for good reason. Emphasise your casual style, tone down a smart get-up or simple hide a bad hair day with a cap. Colourful patterned caps are a go, but dark caps were seen more often, likely because of how easy it is to pair with anything.

For something more luxe, try a black leather cap, and wear contrasting fabrics to create an interesting textural look.

There’s no better time to wear a fluffy hat, and in this instance, it’s best to keep it in a neutral colour so as not to go completely overboard. However that doesn't exclude a good pattern, and we love this Dalmatian printed bucket hat.

Fluffy trapper hats were also seen on multiple occasions, and rapper Tyler the Creator rocked a brown version with the ear flaps pinned up. All black and gold chains gives the look a Russian edge, while white and a Varsity jacket feels a bit “teenage Easter Bunny”–in a cool way!

Finally, the beanie and the balaclava got together for a crossover we didn’t know we wanted, and this striped beanie pulled over the face with heart-shaped eye cutouts is both badass yet extremely cute, and we're big fans.
