Dr Vicki Belo and Cristalle Belo-Pitt open up about the evolving relationship between fashion, individuality, and dressing with intention

A generation’s worth of memories reside within the Belo household. It is within these walls that Dr Vicki Belo has cared for her daughters and granddaughter, with whom she has laughed, cried and loved for decades. All those birthdays, anniversaries and simple celebrations carry enough significance to fill their cup several times over. As is the case with all mothers to their children, Vicki has plenty to pass on, from signs of affection, lessons learned and pieces to be inherited too.

When asked about her favourite fashion brands and designers, Vicki answered, “I fell in love with Gucci in the Nineties,” Vicki recounts, “When Tom Ford became its designer. I love his pieces.” Ford became Gucci’s creative director in 1994, and the time he spent with the company was widely regarded as a golden age. His influence persists even today, with notable nods to his work present in the house’s latest Fall collection. It was also around this period that Vicki established her first clinic, setting the stage for nearly three decades of aesthetic excellence.

Much of Vicki’s wardrobe is drawn from that Ford era, having developed and maintained her appreciation for his designs. Her favourite pieces, however, are from the Gucci x Adidas collaboration, which she prizes for its comfortable and sporty quality. “I’m into special editions, those one-of-a-kind pieces,” she elaborates.

This also translates to her fondness for Gucci Bamboo Handle bags. “I want to be unique, I want to stand out,” she underscores. The material of the Bamboo Handle bags and, for that matter, all of the brand's creations are not unlike Vicki’s own resilient and impactful story in building her empire as we know it today. Bent, but never broken, she and the brand alike are an example of timeless grace, but instead a study in sophisticated yet daring growth.

When it comes to fashion, Vicki views it as a way to convey how she’s feeling on any given morning. “I’m not about practicality when it comes to bags—it’s more about beauty.” If she feels playful, she will default to something fun; if the tone of the day calls for something serious, business outfits will be her choice of attire. But this isn’t enough. She wants pieces that feel good to wear. “It’s very important for me to feel self-confident,” she says. “The dress becomes a part of me, and I always found Gucci to have the nicest cloth.”

Vicki has had decades to figure out what truly matters to her when it comes to fashion. She places great importance on aesthetics, but also recognises that this means very little if such pieces cannot be worn easily. Still, she has an experimental, adventurous attitude and is always open to trying new outfits. This, she hopes, is how her daughters will also come to approach fashion and style.

“Cristalle uses a lot of my older clothes,” Vicki reveals. “She’s taller than me, so it makes her stand out.”

“My mum has always had beautiful pieces,” Cristalle says with a measure of admiration. “Growing up around her, I naturally became curious about what was inside her closet.” It was this latent curiosity that led her to closely and thoroughly examine each item in her mum’s wardrobe. Perhaps without even realising it, she gravitated toward pieces that Vicki favoured herself—bags, jackets and accessories that were full of personality, capable of elevating any outfit they happened to be in.

“And yes, I may have borrowed something once or twice without formally asking,” Cristalle laughs. “But I think that is part of the fun of having a stylish mother. Her closet always felt like a place of discovery.”

Cristalle has more than inherited her mother’s disposition toward fashion. “It allows me to step into the energy that the moment requires,” she enthuses. “Dressing up is not just about looking beautiful—it is about feeling prepared, confident and intentional.”

As an entrepreneur, philanthropist, managing director of the Belo group's Belo Essentials and a mother of two, it is a necessity that she has an answer for whatever she happens to be dealing with on any given afternoon. “I move through very different worlds,” she explains. “One day I may be in a business meeting. In another, I am hosting an event or spending time with my family by the beach. Fashion helps me shift into each role with ease.”

Cristalle has an affinity for bold, expressive pieces that exude character. Versatile, yes, but always with an assertive presence that makes them unique. “You can wear [them] in a very polished, glamorous way, but you can also make it feel relaxed, playful or even bohemian. That versatility appeals to me because my life is not one-dimensional.”

Thanks to Vicki, Cristalle has also learned another valuable lesson when it comes to fashion: they’re an investment. “She taught me that they’re not about price or labels,” she declares. “It is about how something makes you feel, how well it is made and whether it has staying power in your life.”

“You should wear the clothes—the clothes should not wear you.”

Gucci is, itself, a house founded on family. Its multigenerational presence is a cycle; the result of qualities being passed down, cultivated and perfected. In the same vein, Vicki hopes to instil in her daughters the importance of seeking quality. That is, to look past labels and to focus on what matters most—a timeless style that thrives and transcends, passed down from one to the next.
