Meet Ella Emhoff, the Stylish Step-Daughter of US Vice President Kamala Harris
At the US presidential inauguration, all eyes were on the nation's new president and vice president—but one particular corner of the fashion internet only had eyes for Ella Emhoff. Emhoff is the daughter of (you guessed it) America's new Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris.
And, in a sea of neat, staid tailored pantsuits, proper pearls, and neatly curled coiffures, Ella Emhoff wore a sparkling collared Miu Miu tweed coat (over a Batsheva dress—in a design that references Victorian and pioneer garments), a centre part in her hair, and a black headband. She looked... cool.
A Los Angeles native who's currently a student at Parsons School of Design in New York City, Emhoff lives in Brooklyn, has tattoos, studies textiles, and (until recently) ran a commission-based knitting business. See some of her work on her Instagram here:
"I think the goal is definitely to have my own knitwear brand, label, whatever you call it," she said.
"Setting up a shop, most likely online of where I can just have a bunch of different pieces that I'm constantly creating and doing my commission-based work and having that all be in a shop. I’d like to try and stay a one-woman show, but I think as stuff has started ramping up with my knitwear, it's been harder. I'm only one woman, I can only make so many commissions while I'm also trying to just enjoy life."
In an interview with the New York Times last week, Emhoff talked about her family dynamic.
"It’s like you get the most confident, strong personality people, a lot of them being women, and it’s like you’re layering all of them on top of each other and it becomes everyone trying to talk over each other," she said. "So it’s a lot of really enthusiastic yelling."
We can't wait to see the next-level style that Emhoff brings to the White House over the next four years.
