Your ultimate wardrobe for the new fashion season has been curated—just add to cart

To fully understand the key fashion items of a new season, it isn’t just enough to know the trends. More importantly, what are the fashion buyers ordering, and customers—like yourself—eventually purchasing?

Which are the It bags that multi-label retailers are spending their budgets on? What shoe sold out last year on Net-a-porter—just in personal shopping reservations and never even made it onto the website? The answer is below, and good news: there will be more of it this season.

Libby Page, Senior Fashion Market Editor from Net-a-porter, has worked out a list of 10 key spring/summer 2020 items to update your wardrobe. “This has been one of the most wearable runway seasons we have seen in some time with items that can walk straight from the runway into a woman’s real life,” she says.

And the colour of the season? The non-colour. “This season, monochromatic dressing was a subtle way to make a statement with striking shapes and silhouettes in bold black and white hues. For us, monochromatic pieces have always had an impact when they upload and with the diversity in brands, price points and aesthetics we predict this season will be even more successful.”

With that in mind, time to start adding to cart:

The Short Suit

"It's just incredibly wearable. We saw huge success with our short suits last year, likely due to the fact we were addressing what most women are actually doing in the summer—working. Net-a-porter sold over 100 different styles of suits. Following this proven success, we really went after this style, with 60 short suits coming for the new season."

It really is all down to the length of the short, which should sit just above the knee.

The Waistcoat

"This is a new update to the suit: layer a waistcoat [like De La Vali's woven version] over a shirt as a three-piece suit or as a single item. We saw it at Saint Laurent, Burberry and Nili Lotan which were just some of our favourites."

The Polo Top

"Meet the season's new alternative to the button-down shirt or blouse [like this Albus Lumen's version]. Our woman is going from the office to the school run, to work dinners—and this is an option that works for all 24 hours of her life. It’s really easy to pack and doesn’t wrinkle. We backed this new item with over 1,100 units across a variety of styles."

It’s the power piece our customers will wear to work and beyond.

The Wear-With-Everything Turtleneck

"The turtleneck will be the underpinning for this season and beyond. They are wardrobe classics that are evergreen, and help with the transition from season to season. We loved the men’s shirt at The Row in traditional blue paired with a black turtleneck for the ultimate suited personality look. Our favourites come from Les Reveries and Victoria Beckham."

The Men’s Shirt

"This season, it was all back to business as usual with the shirt returning to a more classic shape. As mentioned before, we loved the men’s shirt at The Row in traditional blue, and we also loved the classic white shirts from casual brands Emma Willis and King and Tuckfield."

The shirt has returned to a more classic shape.

The Thong Sandal

"The thong sandal is an easy way to tap into the ’90s trend and it is a natural move on from the naked sandal, which we have seen dominate for so many seasons now. The style will be returning this February amongst 36 other thong sandals including Wandler’s new Elza style."

Pair the sandals with high-waisted jeans and a one-shoulder top, or a bralette with a matching cardigan (a la Katie Holmes in Khaite).

The Next-Gen Trench

"Just when we thought we came to the end of the line with new interpretations of the trench coat, spring/summer surprised us with so many fresh iterations—from deconstructed pieces to blazer trenches giving us more the reason to invest this season."

We loved the blazer trench from Loewe, the split sleeve at JW Anderson and the deconstructed version at Junya Watanabe.

The '90s Shoulder Bag

"Baguette bags are not new news but this season we saw them become the most dominating bag trend of the season. Brands took the shape and updated it in a modern way like at Bottega Veneta where a chunky chain strap was added, while some brands took to the trend more literally, such as By Far with its update on its iconic ‘Rachel’ bag."

Pair it with a classic '90s look: slip dressings, slim skirts and bodysuits.

The Dominate-The-Room Dress

"Make an entrance! Ruffles, sculptural sleeves and bubble hems all adorned the runway, but it was these traditional shapes done in unexpected ways with fabrics like silk, taffeta and tulle, which gave them fresh appeal. A particular highlight was Jacquemus’ bold, pink cotton gown which was a showstopper at his 10th anniversary show, along with Erdem and Loewe who both use cotton, a traditionally casual fabric, to create dresses with couture-like silhouettes."

In contrast to all the wearability and minimalism this season, make an entrance with these scene-stealing dresses.

The Chain Anklet

"We first saw this last Fall with Bottega Veneta, whose mesh chain anklet pump was a hard-to-get-your-hands-on item. We sold out via our personal shopping reservations and previews before the style could even make its way onto the site. It’s no surprise Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta has bought these back with an even chunkier chain and elegant round toe."

Chain anklets have dominated the streets for several seasons now and designers this season have integrated it into the shoe itself.

"We've recently launched Alighieri’s second shoe collection of party heels exclusively, all with the brand’s signature gold talisman adorning the ankles."
